My First Cabbie Recreated in 2000
I'm sure most of you remember your doll that has been your favorite through the years. Others were crazed about Barbies, Raggedy Ann, Strawberry Shortacke, etc. Mine was the Cabbage Patch Doll. Just hearing it's name sounds like an odd doll.
It may look funny to some because it wasn't like your pretty walking doll with wel-groomed silky hair and red lips. This was a kid's doll. They came with many different faces, or so the rare fanatic calls it head molds. It hit the eighties like crazy where the prices were to luxurious for a toy. Nevertheless, I managed to get one of these dolls after months of begging. She was a #3 head mold girl with lemon hair and green eyes. She had a dimple on her left cheek. She was a Spain World Traveller Doll who wore the cutest outfit.
The picture above is my first ever Cabbage Patch Doll, Roberta Erin. She is just adorable. She is a birthday present from my Dad. When we moved to a new place, I left her behind because I had so many things to pack and I didn't know that there was still that cabbie fire in me. That fire lit up after the 15th Anniversary Collector's Edition were sold in 1998. Once again, it was my Dad who got me the doll for Christmas.
As I started collecting, I realized that there was a *NEED* to recreate this lost doll. I have searched for the outfit and finally got the luck to win one from an auction complete with the passport and Airways Bag, with a shoe (and thanks to Martha McGrath, my little Bobbie Erin has her other shoe!). But there was still a problem: I don't have the doll!!! As I had spread my obsession for this search, friends have tried to help me look for this doll. Early in July, a friend of mine said that she had found the doll that I was looking for, but the seller is taking a long time to correspond with her. Up to now she is still waiting on thin air for a response.
Last week, a cabbie friend of mine up North, Desiree, had e-mailed me and said that she has a super belated birthday gift for me. I had a feeling that it's cabbie related, but I didn't think it was a cabbie life altering event. On Tuesday August 1, I got a package from her. The box looked like it would fit a CPK doll so I knew it had to be a doll. When I opened the box, I saw a #3 lemon haired girl with green eyes and a dimple on her left cheek wearing a Spanish World Traveller outfit who looked as if it was smiling at me saying: "Surprise! I am home! Come give me a hug!" I was so happy that I had a bit of a tear gush. It's such a dream come true! I will never forget that day, and I will be forever thankful to my friend for "bringing back" my first cabbie to me.
