Reports 2008 Second  Half Year

Report of Meeting held on Monday, July 14, 2008
On this, the first meeting for the second half of this year we had 26 persons present to hear the speaker for the day, Margaret from the RIVER OF LIFE, talk about the many arteries and veins in our body. In fact, if you could put all of your blood vessels in a line you would cover a distance in excess of 90.000 km. All that is serviced by just 5 litres of blood, which is pumped around the body by our heart once every minute. Rather impressive I thought and very well presented by the speaker.

The speaker for the day was David Goreham from the Metropolitan Fire Service. His topic was “Fire Safety” and he had an audience of 25 persons present. This was despite the extremely cold weather after we had the coldest morning for 25 years with a minimum of just 0.7 degrees. David is an excellent speaker who interspersed his topic with numerous examples of real happenings in his long career as a fire fighter.

Report of Day-Tour held on Friday, August 1, 2008
On an extremely cold and wet day, we left the Festival Theatre at 9.30 am with 33 persons on board. That is many more than the bookings we had and filled up the entire coach, with hostess have to sit on the floor. This stresses the point I always make about making bookings in advance. Had we known this we would have had the bigger coach. We travelled on the South Road via Clarendon to Prospect Hill, experiencing rain and thunder on the way. A welcome warm cup of morning tea/coffee was appreciated and a browse through this very old museum. Then on to Strathalbyn for a hot lunch at the Victoria Hotel. Leaving there, we travelled to Mt. Lofty but is was so cold there that many did not want to get of the coach. Arrived back in Adelaide by 4.00 pm.

Report of Meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2008
The weather is still not improving and is now wet as well as cold. However, 24 very faithful members still braved the wintry conditions and turned up to hear David Ennis with the assistance of his wife Maxine talk about the Repatriation Hospital’s Museum. It has a large collection of memorabilia from all the theatres of war including some very rare medals. It is also worth noting that David worked in the SAR himself many years ago. It seems that the Railways is one of the most popular occupations as we have had lots of speakers who have either worked there themselves or have someone in their family who worked there. Interesting and well worth a visit. They are situated within the grounds of the Hospital at 216 Daws Road, Daw Park. The death was recorded of Stan Eden, formerly a Machinist at Islington, aged 87, and of Laurel Kittel, formerly Enquiry Clerk in Adelaide, aged 89. A minute’s silence was observed for the departed members.

On a glorious spring day, we had 29 persons turning up for today’s meeting. The speaker for the day, John Dodman gave a general outline of the activities of the 43rd Rail Squadron of the Royal Australian Engineers. It was also of note that John himself worked for SAR from 1952 until 1990 finishing his career at the SAR Institute.

The weather today was very wet, windy and cold which would be the reason for only 23 persons turning up for today’s meeting. Normally we have a very good attendance when the speaker for the day is John Evans from SA Tourism. He is always popular as he has so many stories to tell about the subject that is so dear to us, Railways. Moreover, today’s topic “Proceed to Quorn” was no different. He showed us slides from the heydays of this once so very busy line. However, as with so many of our historic lines, this one has al but disappeared with the track ripped up for scrap metal. Sadly, only the photographs and the memories will remain.

Report of Day-Tour held on Friday, September 26, 2008
Twenty-seven persons went on this very delightful trip to Cape Jervis to enjoy the scenery. Morning tea was had at the Myponga Beverage Factory and after a short stop in Yankalilla, we proceeded to Cape Jervis and the Cape Jervis Community Club were we where treated to a 3-course home-cooked meal prepared by their volunteers. And what a meal it was. A delicious Pumpkin Soup was followed by a choice of roast lamb or battered garfish and finished with a delightful apricot crumble. After a quick look at the Cape, we also paid a short visit to the Wirrina Cove before returning to Adelaide. All in all this was a very enjoyable day, which could be considered as the best day-tour of this year.

Always popular Cliff Olds was the speaker for today and in his usual easygoing way, he gave us an overview of the many rail activities in the Broken Hill area in the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s. Considering that all the narrow gauge services and lines are gone now, it certainly is one of our history’s fascinating eras, remembered by many of our members. An audience of 29 persons appreciated his efforts. The death was recorded of Wally Fox, formerly Plant Engineer at Islington, on 29th of September aged 91. A minute’s silence was observed for the departed member.

Regretfully the speaker for the day did not turn up at our meeting with members of whom 25 were present. The afternoon was spent listening to three of our members reminiscing on their work experiences. Some of our members have lots of stories to tell as we have proved in the past. Some general discussions were held. The death was also noted of John Reddaway, formerly Administration Officer at Keswick, at the age of 71. A minute’s silence was held for the departed member.

Because of the absence of the advertised speaker, our member Lynn Venning showed a short video of the 51st Annual Australian Association of Live Steamers Convention, which was hosted by the Penfield Model Engineers Society over the Easter weekend 2007. Another member, Jack Strapps, then gave a short talk about his overseas travel experiences by train. Members present totalled 26.

Our guest speakers for the day, Sharee Firth and her assistant Tony, from Services SA spoke about the various services now provided by Services SA. This is a central point provided, were anyone who needs government information, can find it in the one location in lieu of having to locate an individual government department. This is a very useful entry point to any government department. Members present totalled 27.
