Medical Missions in Peru

Peru is on the Pacific side of South America.  It is home to the famous and beautiful Andes Mountains.  The capital city of Lima has grown rapidly over the past few years due to the mass migration of those living in the jungle moving to the city.  They have come seeking a better life, only to find cardboard shacks on the side of a hill.  They struggle to make enough to feed their family and stay in their makeshift homes.  The center of the city has grand government buildings and cathedrals dated to nearly 500 years ago.  As we move toward the outskirts of the city, we see a much different story. Youth For Christ (YFC) works with high school and junior high youth, teaching through the Sex, Lies and the Truth series by Focus on the Family and through AIDS prevention.  The children growing up on the outskirts have seen their parents turn towards drugs and alcohol and seen the heartache that these can cause.  Medical Missions International also works in Peru and  serve those without health care.  Opthamologists, dentists, physicians and other health care professionals all volunteer their time to make these projects successful.  They work in Lima, Arequipa and in the Sierra.  During my time in Peru, I also had the opportunity to travel to Ecuador and work with MMI on two medical mission projects.  We worked on the border of Peru in a city called Huaquillas and also in the Sierra in a city near Cuenca.  During our time there over 1000 people made first time commitments to follow Jesus!  Praise the Lord for His fruit and harvest. My goal will always be to above all, share the love of God through all that we do and say.
