Dariya Speaks of "Nirvana"
Within is the busy filth - why wash outside!
The palace houses the Beloved, you are not seeking him.
No one finds secret without device, why dodge company of saints.
Dariya says you cunning and coward, why bang your head and then cry.
Birdie, which direction will you fly!
Devoid of name, devoid of wings, confused and more
confused do you remain on earth.
Despiteful to master and defiant to saints, despitefully shall you waste life.
Some one else's woman and palace, pray tell, have what special quality!
Intoxicated, letting lust overtake your body - you give up elixir, take poison.
Do you not realize thing of the day, toward which each moment she plans treachery.
Without lotus feet you will drown, will suffer and not even be able to fathom the depth.
Dariya says: without devotional song to truth, you waste life while weeping.
O wise people! trod this impenetrable path.
I say to you, so that you can understand. Get alert now, this time.
No grass-clumps nor thorns nor stones are there, no trees-forest-shrub
No Vedants nor Koran nor officiating priests are there, without ink the characters excel.
There is no river nor sea nor Ganges, only the brightness of knowing.
Neither there is Ganapati nor Fanapati nor Brahma, there is no groom for creation.
Outside of paradise, mortal world and world below the earth, there is the sovereign king.
Dariya says what you see there is the truth, O saints! think about it.
Get Alert Now,
This Time.
The first discourse: 21st January, 1979: Osho Commune International, Pune
'Dariya Speaks of "Nirvana".'
Nirvana is not something that can be described in words. Nirvana is not something that can be expressed in language. Even then all the Buddhas have expressed it. What can’t be done, (they) have tried to do it. An impossible task if ever has been attempted on (this) earth it is only this - to try and say that which can’t be said; to express that which can’t be expressed.
And it is not that the enlightened ones have not succeeded. (They) have not succeeded with all - that is true. After all, the ones who have resolved not to hear it, there was no way to succeed with them. With them, even if it were possible to describe Nirvana in words, there was no hope for success. For they were stone deaf. They had determined not to listen, not to see. But the ones who imbibed with heart, the ones who extended their begging bowl of love and took in the utterances of the enlightened ones; it got conveyed to them even though it was not possible to convey. The message got to them even though the message was not possible to get. It is in this sense that Dariya says: "Dariya Speaks of 'Nirvana', that I am saying the words full with nirvana, saturated with nirvana, submerged in nirvana. Those who will be able to open up (their heart), those who are willing to really listen, those who are not eager into debate but have rather developed a relish into a dialogue, those who are not merely hearing out of idle curiosity but who have developed a burning desire to know, will certainly be able to listen. Wrapped up alongside words the wordless too will reach them." For when someone like Dariya speaks, he does not speak from mind. Someone like Dariya speaks from the very depths of his innermost being. That voice is not merely a voice of his thoughts buzzing in his skull, but rather a reflection of the endless current of experience in the inner core of his heart.
The words of a man like Dariya grow out of the void that has been born within Dariya. Those are the reverberations from his void. They come drenched with the soundless sound from his innermost core. And, it is like someone passes through a garden who may not even touch the flowers or may not embrace the trees, but the particles of fragrant pollen floating in the wind, the fragrance of flowers will induce fragrance in his clothing. Apparently the flowers have not touched him, the pollen has not fallen upon his clothing, without being seen, invisibly his clothing becomes fragrant. When (you) pass by the rose bushes, a little fragrance of the roses surrounds you and follows you for long ways. In the same way when words pass in the proximity of the flowering of someone's innermost being, they bring a little fragrance along with. But the fragrance is very subtle. The fragrance is non-aggressive. The fragrance is minuscule. Perhaps it may fill the nostrils of those who would listen with their hearts fully open. Perhaps it may become a dance of exuberance in their being, perhaps it may touch the strings of their inner lute, perhaps it may awaken the soundless sound within them, perhaps their eyes may open, some movement of their eyelids may happen, perhaps they also discover that it is not always night, there is day too, and they may also discover that the darkness is not the reality - light is the reality. And we lived in darkness, because we had kept our eyes closed. And the noise is only in the mind. Just a little descend from the mind and there is all kinds of symphony. The music of Omkar is incessantly happening.
Those words drenched in Omkar - when they arrive - only a right listener is needed who can imbibe. The one who puts aside his ideas, the one who removes his head and put it aside and the one who extends his begging bowl of pure longing - for him Dariya is right; Dariya speaks of 'Nirvana.' But these words of nirvana are heard only by disciples, are heard by lovers, are heard by devotees. These words have nothing to do with scholarliness. And because you understand the language - you will understand them; do not be disillusioned. These words come from void. If you too started to have a few glimpses of this void, only then can you imbibe the sweet juice of these unprecedented, second-to-none sayings.
And the glimpses of void are quite natural glimpses. The only thing is that you have not paid attention to them. They come to you too. Your door also opens up sometimes, your portals also open up sometimes, the suns and moons do take a peek into you sometimes, the winds come and move your heart too sometimes, the sun beams enter you too sometimes. But you are so unconscious, you are so absent that you do not feel anything. The divine keeps happening around you in nebulous ways and you are enclosed within yourselves, with your eyes closed, with door of your heart shut; although living inside the ocean of divinity - remain without knowing it.
Allow some opportunities of void to land within you and then you will be able to understand the words of Dariya. Some time get up in the morning and look at the blue sky, with unblinking eyes, full of awareness and you will be surprised - once in a while a moment will come - once in a while it will come - the moment will come when there is a blue sky outside and also a blue sky inside. For a moment you will be bound with the sky, you will be in a deep embrace (with it.) For a moment then sky will take you in its arms and you would be lost ... lost in a far away world, lost into a new dimension ... the taste that you would get in that moment is the taste of void. For now it is of a water drop, eventually it could become that of the ocean also. For now it is but small, now it came - now it is gone; a fragrance that came riding upon the wind and is vanished - you won't even be able to get hold of it - but then if (you) begin to remember that such are the fragrances and such are the light beams then you will begin to open your doors now-and-then. (When) the night (sky) is full of stars - lie down on the earth, melt into the earth, forget that you exist, let the body become a part of the soil, forget that you exist - the moment the body became a part of the soil is the moment when the inner self became a part of the sky. These episodes happen at the same time.
You are the sum total of both - of the earth and of the sky, of the visible and of the invisible, of the mortality and of the immortality. Allow dust to merge into dust for a while. It is going to happen, if not today - tomorrow. If not today - tomorrow the body will drop - (it) will merge into dust. One day (it) arose from the dust itself and one day (it) will return unto dust itself. Everything returns to its source.
Once in a while allow it to merge with dust willfully. Totally forget that you even have a body and totally forget that you even exist. Only in that forgetting (you) first time get the remembrance of who you really are. In that forgetting itself arises the self-remembrance. In that moment you will become the sky. All the stars will enter within you - you will witness the stars revolving within you. This hour of (experiencing) void is the hour of meditation. Hence, if you try just a little, you can create extra-ordinary breaks even in your ordinary life. And for these breaks you need not go to temple and mosque and shrine. The reality is that if you remained entangled into shrines, temples and mosques - then this shrine of divine: this sky full of stars, this sun showering light, these trees brimming with its nectar, these streams carrying its resonance toward the ocean - from all these you will remain deficient.
And let me also tell you this: if you begin to experience divine through all these, then go to shrine! Then there is joy! Then go to mosque, then go to temple. Thence you will recognize who there is in the temple and who there in the mosque and who in the shrine and who in the church. First you get the possession of eyes. Sharpen your eyes. Then the same divine would be visible to you even in a stone statue. And if there were no statue even then the same would be visible. All presence is his, all absence is his. All being is his, all non-being is his. All life is his and all death is his. Everything is his, because he is everything. But first let there be experience!. And its experience you will have near nature. Because he has his stamp on nature. Every flower has his signature.
If have eyes strain'em n' behold flower on either side.
Someone's marvelous beauty is recorded in these volumes.
If you have the eyes then turn the pages of flowers, do not remain lost in dead books.
If have eyes strain'em n' behold flower on either side.
Turn some pages of flowers, of leaves.
Someone's marvelous beauty is recorded in these volumes.
In these books are written commentaries on someone's inexhaustible beauty. In Geeta's commentaries you will not find it now. If (you) did not find in commentaries of rose, then won't find in commentaries of Geeta. If (it) is not visible in lotus, won't be visible in Koran. And the one who visualized in lotus may also visualize in Koran. Reverse is not possible that first it is visible in Koran and then it is visible in the lotus. Because Koran became far removed from divine. Lotus is still merged into divine. Divine is still flowing through the lotus - that very (redness) is his blushing, that very (perfume) is his fragrance. Even drones have more sense than you. Place a Koran and a lotus and you identify. A drone will be drawn toward the lotus.
There is a recount in the life of emperor Solomon. It was well known that there was no one as wise as him. Once the queen of Ethiopia came to visit the emperor, and she wanted to test him to find out whether he really is wise. And the device that she thought for this test was very significant. The queen of Ethiopia brought an imitation bouquet of flowers in one hand and a bouquet of real flowers in the other. Some great artists have created those imitation flowers. They looked so real that you may doubt the real ones once but you will never doubt those imitation ones. With bouquet in each hand the queen arrived and stood afar in the court and said, "I will not come any closer until you reply one of my questions, which bouquet of flowers is real and which is imitation?" Solomon pondered for a moment, the courtiers were puzzled, that here comes trouble. It was not possible to decide which was real and which was imitation. It was very puzzling, both looked so real. One seemed more real than the other. Each seemed more real than the other. Solomon said, "The light is dim, open all the doors and windows so I can see properly. I have also grown old." It was also true. All the windows and the doors were opened. And as soon as the windows and the doors were opened, Solomon kept looking for a moment and then he decided that the flowers in her left hand were imitation.
The queen of Ethiopia was amazed. She was standing with the bouquet. She was standing with the bouquets in both hands and even she had hard time remembering as to which hand she was holding the imitation flowers - because they too seemed so real! She had written on her hands than this hand had the imitation flower and that hand had the real ones. How did the emperor know? She said, "Please forgive me, but you have amazed me! How did you know?" Solomon replied, "Now there is no need to lie to you. I could see the flowers even before. There really was no need for more light. And the doors and windows that I ordered opened was for the honey-bees. These two honey-bees came from the garden and those flowers on which they sat upon are the real flowers. It is possible to deceive the eyes of man, " Solomon said, "Even Solomon's eyes can be deceived," Solomon said, "but how can you deceive the eyes of the honey-bees."
Your books - no matter how valuable they may be - it may be Koran, bible or Vedants or guru-granth - neither a butterfly will come to them nor honey-bees will sit on them nor drones will hum over them. Just think about it. Where are the drones humming. Where are the butterflies flying to. Follow them. Be with them. Be like them. And you will for the first time have the experience of the void. And for the first time you will understand the meditation a little. And if you have that understanding then the words of enlightened ones become meaningful. Dariya speaks of nirvana. Then these words of Dariya will open up nirvana, will make it naked, remove curtain, remove the veil. Then Nanak's words will unite you with divine. Then Muhammad's words are unprecedented. But you have to have the void within. In that very void those words can reverberate, cause an echo. If you do not even have any void within and your container is full of trash, then nothing can happen. Your container must be empty.
If you want to understand void then go to the nature. Go to mountains. Sit next to trees. Remarkable were those people who bowed to the sun, moon, stars. And called them deities. Enlightened were those people who worshiped fire, lighted candles and focused their meditation onto the candle lights. Fire is his, moon, stars are his. Trees are his. Rivers, lakes, ocean, ponds are his. Better were people, wise were those people who tried to bridge relationship with nature. The one who can bridge relationship with nature, divine is not far away. After all divinity is simply hiding within the veil of nature. Nature is his blanket. If you only start to comprehend nature, you will not stray too far from divine. What is he? A dark night - a nightmare.
Wind roared all night, clouds showered all night long.
Whilst the silence sobbed, the stars yearned all night long.
Bawled and screamed jungles and its pathways all night long.
In the quivering lightening my innermost stayed wide awake all night long.
Ground shook and trees feared shaking with fear all night long.
Innumerable aquatic sources flooded and scaled pathways all night long.
Vast hill kept struggling with the pitch black night all night long.
Each human heart kept drinking out of cup of fright all night long.
The whole creation dreaded while in consternation all night long.
Birds in nests with horror won't get a shut eye all night long.
Fledglings hid in their feathers shivering all night long.
Wild beasts stood in thorns in the caves all night long.
Irritated darkness brawled with storm all night long.
Flying saucer descended from sky on the ground all night long.
What is your life? A long drawn night for which there is no morning in sight. A kind of night which has dropped off its dawn, heaven knows where! And a night in which there are no moon nor stars. A night for which not to speak of moon and stars, not even the fire flies shine. And a night in which not even a candle light nor a spark shine. But there you are, stumbling, falling down, getting up, banging your head against the walls. And you call it life! Life is his whose eyes have opened, because the ones whose eyes have opened are the ones whose morning happened. the life belong to them who have had the encounter themselves. Know oneself then know everyone else. Life belongs to those who have begun to see the dance of divine all around. Only those are alive. Every one else simply dies.
We were effaced anyway,
All these days, O! Death,
What if the body is atop the earth,
Or underneath it.
What difference does it make whether you are above the earth or within the earth. You are already effaced.
"We were effaced anyway,
All these days, O! Death"
When death comes, you also will have to say, "O death! You have come unnecessarily. We were dead anyway. We were already dead anyway. The only difference will be that until now we were above earth and you will slip us beneath earth. What else will be the difference!"
"What if the body is atop the earth,
Or underneath it."
Where does this entire search of the whole life take us? It does not seem to lead us anywhere except to the grave. What kind of life is it that culminates in the grave? Life is that ends in immortality. If it ends in death then do admit that you never actually lived - only deluded that you lived.
Tried every which way, 'Shad", by extending legs in this world.
Alas! Claimed no more that two yard of the ground in the end.
And you try very hard - it is not that you don't. Try to live - try all kinds of tricks, make all kinds of trouble, make all kinds of noise. But, what is the attainment in the end? Just so that you gain just six feet of earth, a measly two yard of earth! Is that all your attainment - is that all the essence! You call it a life! No that is not life!
Listen to the words of Dariya. Search a little for life. Dariya speaks of nirvana.
These are lovely sutra. They contain tremendous sweetness - tremendous spirit. But the only way to become intoxicated is by imbibing. Don't just listen them like the way you listen to every thing else. Listen to them with an overwhelming feeling. Let your eyes become damp. Not only the eyes, let your heart become damp also. Only through the way of the dampness, only through the way of those tears, these word of Dariya can touch the lute of your heart. Until that happens, keep reminding yourself of one thing that you are lost. Do not even think of deluding yourself as to what you have to search. Do not even think of deluding yourself that you know already and "what else do I have to know."
My mind feels uneasy,
My body feels exhausted.
To take trip to far away space,
My heart feels restless.
Heaven alone knows why,
Everywhere I feel pariah this day.
The one whose base is lost,
I am such a shadow today.
Lost is my mind now,
The world seems not awake.
It feels somehow now,
String of life is about to break.
Why only does it 'feel' that it is about to break - it is really true when is this string of life going to break - who knows! Before this string breaks, make that music to rise that never breaks. Strings are made and strings are erased, but the music lives for ever. Before the lute of this life breaks, let it serenade. As it serenades, you grow wings and you take off. You take off toward your destination, toward your home. Otherwise, you are a stranger here, this is not your home. This is not a home for anyone. We have to find our home. This is just an inn.
O love! at the entrance of inn, I feel uneasy.
Allah knows, how long will I here be living.
Do not become attached to this place. Those who have become attached have only suffered. If you want to be attached then be attached to the very source of life. Because only if you attain that then will you know that you have attained. If you attained to nirvana, then you would know that you have attained something. And until you attain nirvana, you would know that you have been only collecting trash. And don't you ever forget it - not for a moment. Because we are always ready to forget. Our ego wants to forget that we are collecting trash. Because the ego feels very hurt with this realization: "Me and collecting trash!" Even when ego collects pebbles, it believes it is collecting gems and diamonds. It stays in shelters and thinks it is staying in its abode. These words are valuable but valuable for only those who have begun to understand this thing that, "my life is being expended without cause and I am taking my leave without singing my song."
Within is the busy filth - why wash outside!
And the revolution happens inside, we are doing all kinds of arrangements outside. The candle shines inside and we are celebrating candle light celebration outside. Let all the rows of candles burn outside but if you are in dark you will remain in dark - until you light the candle inside. And how many arrangements we are doing outside! All the baths ... when will you meditate! The bath will wash away the dirt from body - when will you wash away the dirt fro the innermost! Meditation is the bath for the innermost. The bath will make the body happy and fresh. When will you make your innermost fresh! Your innermost is turning into a corpse, your innermost is becoming all poor and inferior. You have totally ignored your innermost. You have engaged your one hundred percent energies into servicing your body. And this body will be snatched away by death - tomorrow, if not today. This house is as if made with playing cards. This canoe is as if made with paper. It is surely going to sink. No one has ever been able to save it. Just to decorate this canoe, to adorn it with flowers and leaves, you will sacrifice your life or will you also seek the supreme truth inside! The one that belongs to you not only in birth but also in death. The one that belongs to you not only before birth but also after death. To say "it belongs to you" is not correct. You are that truth. "Tat twam asi", that art thou. It is not separate from you.
Within is the busy filth -
the interior is full of mud.
why wash outside!
What mud is Dariya talking about? The same mud of which all the enlightened ones have talked about. What mud is in the interior? Of thoughts, of desire, of memories, of imagination - that is all the mud. That is the mud you are entangled in, that is the mud you are trapped in up to your neck. All kinds of desires are sitting inside with their head erect. And thoughts ... there is a long line of thoughts. There is no rest for a moment, there is no stop for a moment. There is no break in this traffic for a moment - the thoughts that keep moving just keep moving. And what kind of thoughts! Of the past that does not exist - thoughts of that. Someone said something yesterday - thoughts of that. What has not bygone - why do you carry it? Why carry the ghosts and phantoms? What is bygone is bygone - let go of it. Why carry that trash around? Why carry corpses?
You might have heard the story of Shiva. After Parvati's death, Shiva put Parvati's corpse on his shoulder and wandered around the entire country - so that he may meet some doctor, may meet some healer, may encounter some miracle and someone may bring Parvati to life. The corpse started to disintegrate. A corpse is a corpse. The nature makes no exception - what if it is Parvati's corpse. It started to disintegrate, it started to stink. Every limb of the corpse started to fall off after disintegration. The myth is that wherever a limb of Parvati fell off, a Hindu place for pilgrimage was born.
But Shiva carrying a corpse!
This is your account. This is not an epic, this is your psychology. Every person is carrying corpses. And they become disintegrated and wherever the limbs from corpses fall off, that is where you have the place of pilgrimage of your memories. Even in the old age, people reminisce the place of pilgrimage in their youth. Once they had loved some woman, desired some woman, once they have achieved success, once they had waved their own flag on this earth - they keep looking back again and again. Now there is nothing except foul odor. Now there is nothing except memory. There is no existence of the past except in your memory. Any person who has the slightest wisdom would immediately break himself away from his past. Why carry the burden of his trash!
And one interesting thing - the one who breaks away from the past, his relevance to the future is simultaneously severed; for future is nothing but a desire to relive the past in a better way, in a refined way. What is the future, what do you wish for tomorrow? You wish for tomorrow the same that you experienced yesterday and loved it. Now you wish for it more and more. What you experienced yesterday probably had some thorns associated with it. Now, for tomorrow you wish that there be no thorns, only the flowers may remain. Probably there were some pains, but you wish to deny those pains also - you wish pure pleasure to remain for tomorrow, pleasure devoid of pain may remain for tomorrow.
What is your future? Your future is simply a refined picture of your past. The day the past withers is also the day when the future, the projection of the past withers away. And if the future and the past both wither away, then you would embrace this very moment, you would stand still in this very moment. That standing still is the stopping, is the resting. And in that standing still, in that stopping is the first encounter with divine. In that very standing still - when everything inside you stands still, not a trace of thought, not a trace of desire - there is neither a past nor a future, you neither look back not leap forward - here and now - and all the mud washes away. The one who stands still in the present, his heart becomes purified.
"Within is the busy filth" and within there is so much filth. There is a heap of mud. "Why wash outside!" And here we are who keep making scheme after scheme outside - we are spraying perfume on top of wounnds so that they may not stink. We are putting flowers on top of wounds so that those wounds may not be seen by anyone. There is a continuous attempt to hide the dirt from within with the beauty projected from the outside. There is an effort to fill the emptiness of within with the wealth from outside. This only is your world. This only is your life. What really are you doing? Somehow to hide the impoverishment of the within with ornaments from the outside. The beggary of the within may be concealed with gems and diamonds from the outside. But is this possible? This is not possible. The wealth from the outside remain outside - it does not ever get inside. There is no getting together of the outside and the inside. These are separate dimensions. The illness is inside and the remedy is being applied outside. These medicines simply are hoax.
Dariya is saying,
Within is the busy filth - why wash outside!
The palace houses the Beloved, you are not seeking him.
And you are racing. You are racing, you wish to get this, get that and the one that is the ultimate in all 'gettings'; that beloved is seated within your palace, within your abode, within your heart. Go to this temple, go to that temple, bang your head hear, bang your head there and the one that your are searching for many lives - he never left you for a moment, while sitting inside the core of your heart waits for you. Your master inside you is waiting for you.
"The palace houses the Beloved, you are not seeking him."
No one knows how many paths you are racing on and are ignoring only the one path - the path to go inside. Before you begin search outside - at least take a peek inside. Do not let it happen that we go on searching him outside while he is present inside. Those who peeked inside, found him and those who kept running outside, kept running. They lived empty handed, died empty handed.
No one finds secret without device, why dodge company of saints.
But the path to the inner palace can only be shared by one who has established oneself in the inner palace. You have forgotten it for an epoch - such an indefinite epoch. So many layers upon layers of confusion have deposited inside you that if you started to remove those layers you will be digging for many lives. Nothing would be known to you. Only the one who has arrived inside can give you the path to the inside. "No one finds secret without device," you need the key.
And have you observed?
No matter how large the lock is, the key is just small. And no matter how complex the lock is, the key is simple. And if you do not have the key on hand, you may keep striking the lock with a hammer, it would not unlock. And if you have the key on hand, even a very small child can unlock it. No strong wrestler is needed to undo a lock. Not much energy is spent. Similar to this key to open a lock is also the process, ... the process of yoga is also simple. Even a child can open once he sets his hands on it.
Dariya was twenty years old when he attained to the ultimate enlightenment. And here there are some elderly people 80 years old, who not to speak of Buddhahood, they are still seeking the same trash that if a youth was seeking, you can forgive them ... but elderly are also seeking the same. That is very astounding. If there is a youth who is ambitious, you can forgive him - after all he is only a youth - there is blindness of the youth - but even the elderly are ambitious. One foot is in the grave and yet they wish to have some more ambitions fulfilled - one more office, a little more time on the chair or attain a bigger chair. This saga of chair never ends. There is no end in sight. Children can be forgive, even the youth can be forgiven, elderly can’t be forgiven. But if someone gathers courage to be in the proximity of a master then even children, he youth can attain to the ultimate truth.
Dariya became a Buddha only at the age of twenty. If you get your hands on the key then the process is very simple - it is easy. It is as easy as two plus two makes four. "No one finds secret without device." Remember this that without a device, without a proper device, without a proper science you would not find the secret, you would not be able to find the mystery. "why dodge company of saints" but people are peculiar. Even if some time a yearning arises to seek the divine, they escape from the company of saints. They think they can do it by themselves. If they want to learn a language they go to a teacher; if they want to learn mathematics they go to a teacher; if they want to learn as worthless things as geography, history - even then they go to a teacher. Anything they want to learn, they go to some school. Only for the divine - they think why go to any one. "We will do it ourselves." And this disease has spread far and wide this century. Hence the divinity has more or less departed from it. This century an ego has arisen in men that they would find it by themselves, why learn from any one else! And it is not that once in a while some one has not found it by himself. Some time one person in millions would attain to truth by himself. But that is an exception. And exception is not rule. Exception only proves the rule. Do not sit idly nursing your ego. The reason of avoiding company of saints is simply this - the first condition of the company of saints is: to surrender, to bow down. And ego does not want to bow down. People are escaping.
Beauty-love are the same, it is simply evident the names are two.
If that be true, are we on par with them?
Asked the way to intelligence, the madness called out:
'That itself is wandering confused, me - I am the guide.'
The intelligence itself is wandering confused, wandering perplexed. If you listened to the intelligence and followed it, you would really regret.
There is a parable by Kahlil Gibran. There was a man used to go from one town to the next and used to say, "The one who wants to find god must follow me." No one ever would follow him and never would any problem arise. But it so happened in one town that a youth got up and said, "Here I come to follow you." The man got afraid, hesitated for a moment but then said, "Alright, you come, nothing to worry about." He made him meander through a lot of jungles, mountains, deserts. But he too was stubborn. This man used to think that the youth would tire himself in a month or two and skip. But he doggedly followed him. An year went by, two years went by, three years went by, he did not tire. But that man began to tire, wondering how long could he keep trying to tire him? In trying to tire one has to tire. And when he realized that he is not really leaving, three years have gone by, so this man may ruin his life. He may ruin even my life! After six years had gone by, this man fell in the feet of the youth and said, "Your highness, forgive me, not you leave." So he replied, "Where should I go? You told me you will introduce me to god. That is why I am following you." He said, "Hog wash! I could not introduce you to god. Because of you my own path is lost. Previously, I knew my path. The day you have joined me is the day since I have even lost my path. Now you do me a kindness. And now I will not even in my dreams say to any one to follow me, I will make you reach."
Your scholars and preachers keep saying to you, "Follow us, we will make you reach god." And there security lies in the fact that you never follow them. And your security lies with the same scholars and preachers. Because they are also liars and you are also liars. Two lies have a kind of synchronicity between them. But whenever you will face a person like Dariya, Kabir, Nanak, Farhad, you will become afraid, you will start to tremble. You will fall right in your face. You will fear of an instantaneous death, and instantaneous dilemma. If you wish to walk with this man, you would have to eradicate yourself, you would have to wipe yourself out. Dariya has used the exact words "why dodge company of saints", Dodge means to hide, to escape, to conceal, to fear. Your are afraid of the company of saints, hiding from it, escaping it! But even when a man escapes he decides on fine arguments for his escaping, for example, "What is so special there! That is why I don't go there." That is why you have always spread all kinds of rumors about the enlightened ones. And there is a reason behind that. It is on the basis of those rumors that you are able to hide yourself, otherwise you will not be able to hide. Only behind those rumors you find an excuse as to what is the need to go there. Who is there after all. What is there anyway. Or whatever is there is all wrong. You manage to find some real big words, of which you do not even know the meaning.
A friend has written me a letter - many such letters arrive - "I would really like to come but I have heard that whosoever goes there becomes hypnotized. Therefore I am afraid that if I went and became hypnotize, then what shall I do?" What is hypnotism, perhaps they do not even know. But they caught onto a word. And with every word we have a meaning associated, a connection associated. Now he is feeling anxiety, he likes to come and at the same time might be afraid that he may just be hypnotize like every one else. And he must feel like this that there seem to be evidence also. People go there good and well and come back in orange clothing. Can it happen just like that. There has to be some hypnotism happening there. Nothing seems to be clear. This is what he has written, "many people went from my home town and they all came back wearing orange clothes. And ever since they all came back, they talk things topsy-turvy. They say nothing logical. And I know them from before. They were quite alright. When they left they were absolutely well. Therefore, I feel anxiety that I, after going there, may also not get entangled."
So, first a man stops himself by constructing that kind of a web. Then even if he arrives here, he comes all well prepared. He stays alert that before any problem arises, he has to run away. He stays far and distant, does not come close. People bring themselves here, they say, "Although we have come, first we will see others doing meditation. Then we will do it. When we are totally convinced that there is nothing suspicious in it, then we will do it." But seeing others doing meditation, what can you see? When some one is dancing in his overwhelming energy, you can see the dance, but how will the overwhelming energy be seen? And why is he dancing? When the dance is happening inside, the outer dance is but a projection - as if some one is dancing and his shadow also dances. Now if you would keep watching the shadow, could you recognize the dancer, could you know him? What forms outside the body is nothing but a shadow.
Could you watch Meera dance and know that Krishna was playing flute inside her heart? Could you have known this fact while watching Meera dance that Meera is dancing before Krishna and not before you? That Meera's dance is not a dance like the dance of female dancers. Meera was not really a great dancer. There is not even a mention of her having taken dance lessons. Any of your female dancers could have defeated Meera in a dancing contest; in some competition Meera could have won, it is not reasonable to expect that. Even then Meera is Meera and the dancers are simple dancers. There is something else in her dance. In her dance there is life, an overwhelming feeling, a devotion. Meera is in atonement with Krishna. Meera says, "Ah! Meera danced with bells tied around ankles." This would undoubtedly be heard by you, her dance too would be seen, even the bells tied around her ankles would be seen, the sound also would be heard. But Krishna playing flute inside that is why she has tied bells around her ankles. On that flute's rhythm is Meera dancing. Around Krishna's proximity is she dancing. Festivity is happening. Meera is not alone. But to you, she would look like she is alone.
How would you understand other people doing meditation! Whatever you understand will be the wrong understanding. And you say, "until I observe others doing, I will not do it." And whatever you understand will be the wrong understanding. And whatever you see from the outside, that will not bring you the news of the inside. Then probably you will never do it. "Is this some kind of a meditation? To dance like this, to be crazy like this, craze such as this - is this some meditation?"
You have even conceived a notion of meditation. You have created a clear basis, an outline, a definition even for meditation as to what meditation has to be like. If a Jaina would come, he thinks that the meditation must be such as if Mahaveera is sitting still. Then Meera never did meditation, then Chaitanya never did meditation. And remember, if you regard only Meera's meditation as meditation, then seeing Buddha, you ... or Mahaveera sitting still peacefully you would think, "What is this, they are sitting idle. Where is the dance? Where are the bells?" You make up notions. And for each person divine happens in a unique manner, not according to some expectation. For each individual divine happens in an original manner, it happens in an unprecedented manner. When it happens within you, then you will know. But you fear, "we will not do, we will see." As if some one would be quenched by seeing the ocean. As if someone will be satiated by seeing food. This will have to be digested. This will have to be digested and made into juices of life. It will have to be transformed into blood, flash, bone. But fear takes over that those who transformed into blood, flash, bone have gone somewhat cuckoo, have become incomprehensible, "I too may not become so incomprehensible."
Just a few days ago ... I have one of my sannyasins from America - Gopa - her father came. He is lovely man. Gopa is happy, is ecstatic - so he came to visit her. Seeing her ecstasy, he happiness, he too started to dive. He said to me, "My heart is also leaning toward taking sannyas. But my wife will never understand. She is not here also. She does not even know anything. And she is intellectual kind of a woman. And all of us live at home in fear, afraid of her." I told him that if it was that problematic then maybe he should see when he comes back again. But his heart would insist - the more he danced, the more he meditated ... finally, he started to say, "No, I will leave only after having taken sannyas." He left. There was a phone call yesterday that his wife has committed him to an insane asylum. The reason? Because the wife can never admit as to how this happiness can be real. He never smiled in her presence, he always feared her. Now he does his dance in front of her. Naturally, he has gone mad. In America it is "natural," this is not what you do while conscious - that when the wife says something he burst out laughing. The wife tries to explain to him, "Get rid of these orange clothes. Why have you donned this maalaa? How can we go with all these outside the house?" So, he smiles, laughs, dances. Naturally, the wife must have concluded that he has to have lost his mind.
And the problem is this, if you have not lost your mind and the family members think that you have, then you will laugh even more. How funny! So he must have tried to explain, "I am not insane." But whenever someone tries to tell someone that he is not insane then one becomes more suspicious - that he must definitely be insane. Otherwise, what would you explain. He might have tried to explain to doctor, "I am not insane" and the wife might be saying, "Be quiet, you need not interrupt. Don't we know what insane means! You keep quiet. Let the doctor examine."
And whenever you go to doctor ... go to him in a healthy condition and see - he will find one or the other ailment. You go to him, when you feel absolutely healthy and feel that there is no ailment, everything is alright - you go to a doctor. He will infer for sure one or the other ailment. Not only one but he may infer several ailments. His very profession is such that he infer an ailment, find an ailment. You are consulting with him, that itself is enough proof that you have some ailment. And patient too do not like it if a doctor does not infer any ailment. If the doctor says that you are perfectly alright then the patient thinks that he ought to go to some other doctor. What kind of a doctor is he. Is this a thing to say, "You are perfectly alright! I have come here with all kinds of trouble and he says that this is just psychosomatic. You mind is confused." People do not like such doctors. Then again the doctor has charged fee. So you do have to justify charging fee! If you charge fee just like that, there is no ailment, there is no reason, then the doctor will find one or the other ailment. He will succeed in finding. And before a psychiatrist if you laugh, be happy, then he will definitely conclude that something has gone wrong.
A young man from France took sannyas and went back. There is a law in France, as it is in many countries - that after a certain age you will have to join the armed forces for two years. On his departure he started asking me, "What shall I do - I don't want to join the armed forces. While staying here have learnt the lesson of love - now I don't want to learn the lesson to violate someone. What shall I do." I said, "You don't do anything. Whenever they call you, you do Kundalini meditation." He liked the idea. He said, "This is a perfectly good idea." A few days ago his news arrived that those people have declared him to be insane - won't ever take him in the military. "Because whenever I go to the office, I quickly start to shake my limbs and at once start to do Kundalini meditation. Those people have examined every which way and found me totally insane. Now I am tickled within - what kind of examination is this? They can’t even understand that it is Kundalini meditation. It has nothing to do with insanity."
Man manages to find logic. Man manages to find words. Man manages to produce an aura of logic - to protect himself. For that kind of man it is said, "No one finds secret without device, why dodge company of saints" why are you avoiding the company of saints.
How to find the beloved destination at the end of ride.
The mind itself is bygone, whom to choose as a guide?
You will have to search such a person, you will have to find such a fellow traveler who is deeper than intelligence. One who emanates light from his heart. It is not just a question of his thoughts, he must have experience. One who has had perception. One who has had the knowing. One who is a seen. One who has seen that divine miracle.
When the burning is total, O my heart! be you ignited totally.
Must you ignite, then be Mt. Senai of lightening display.
My wounded heart has invented rather a funny thing thus.
When concealed it hides but then becomes cancerous.
Now the intense desire sways the swing of thought of meeting.
To come close to the heart-break and then departing.
My own eyes have seen a chaos on the honeymoon-night.
Her unveiling her face and the disappearance of the night.
In the night of getting together, on the honeymoon, the eyes have seen an utter chaos.
My own eyes have seen a chaos at the of honeymoon-night.
Her unveiling her face and the disappearance of the night.
You will have to search such a man who has had nuptial ceremony with the divine, the one who has had his honeymoon, the one who has the mark of honeymoon on his forehead, the one who has seen the utmost darkness when the veil is lifted from the beloved and then the departure of darkness from the entire universe, only brightness remains, neither devotee nor the divine remain, rather both become part of one ultimate brightness. Without searching out such a person, it is not possible to get the device.
Does the meeting becomes a reality just by these small talks?
Does destiny changes simply by wishful thoughts?
Do not just sit idly thinking about it. No one has had the union by thinking. No one has had perception by thinking. Thinking may create a break, it does not form a bridge.
Does destiny changes simply by wishful thoughts?
And just by desires, that this may happen or that may happen - with imaginations destinies are not transformed. Some plan is needed, some yogic activity is needed.
Dariya says you cunning and coward, why bang your head and then cry.
Running away from the company of saints and then banging your head and crying that you did not find life, that you did not find secret of life, that you did not find bliss, that you did not find truth, that you lived in vain. You cry banging your head and run away from where you could have found the key; you take a flight from there. Therefore, with harshness and yet with great compassion Dariya has spoken, "Dariya says you cunning and coward," cunning in the sense of a deceiver.
All your argument, traps are either your trickeries or your cowardice. The one who does not have either trickery or cowardice would surely find the company of saints - he has to even if he remains enclosed in his house the master comes looking for him.
Nothing was attained through renunciation except misfortune.
'Shugla' says: all is worthless without his love.
Nothing was attained through renunciation except misfortune.
Nothing would be accomplished with pseudo worships. And all the worships you have performed - you have performed without the help of master. Hence they are pseudo. You have performed candle ceremony (arti), you have performed worship, you have performed fire ceremony (yagna) - but who has given you this device? The one who officiated the fire ceremony for you - has he attained to divine? At least ask him. Does divine pollen floats in his surrounding winds? At least ask him. Take a peak in their eyes. Is there coolness of stars? Do take their hand in you hand. Is there a magnetic energy that attracts you, pull you? Do sit next to him in silence, can some flute be heard? No, he is a hired scholar. You doled out a couple of pennies for the wages to a scholar and he came and officiated the fire ceremony. He is just like you. He is not any different than you - he may be even worse than you.
Nothing was attained through renunciation except misfortune.
Nothing has ever been attained with false worships.
'Shugla' says: all is worthless without his love.
Excepting love there is no prayer anywhere. But who could teach you love? The one who has known love only can give you the taste! That love is not explained, is not taught. It is somewhat similar to a contagious disease. Love is something that infects. It catches like a communicable disease. Satsang simply means this: someone has attained to that ultimate beloved. You get up around him, sit next to him, get up around him, sit next to him - and if not today, tomorrow; if not tomorrow, the day after - one day the disease will take you over. And this disease is the ultimate in well-being - is the ultimate in good fortune.
Birdie, which direction will you fly!
Just think. Wherefrom you came, no one knows. Why did you come - no one know. And bird! which direction would you fly after death - do you know? Before this, make connection with someone who knows, make some relationship.
Birdie, which direction will you fly!
Ask yourself - where are you going? And death comes quickly, then the body will stay right here and the swan, hiding within, where will it go?
Devoid of name, devoid of wings ...
And the one who has not become aware of divine has no wings - keep in mind - he would not be able to take the flight.
Devoid of name ...
The one who does not have the name - does not have the awareness of divine..
devoid of wings
He is without the wings.
confused and more confused do you remain on earth.
You will fall here again and again - will flutter - and keep falling here aagaain and again. You will keep falling into bodies of similar kind. You will keep falling into similar dark wombs.
Devoid of name, devoid of wings, confused and more
confused do you remain on earth.
Despiteful to master and defiant to saints, despitefully shall you waste life.
But, people even when they come in contact with a great master, even then do not make connection, do not start dialog, they start debate. There are some people who if you take to a rose bush, will tally thorns and will never even look at the flowers. And the one who would tally the thorns, if his hands would be pricked with the thorns, should there be any wonder? If your hand become bloody and wounded, should there be any surprise? And the one whose hands become bloody and wounded with thorns, becomes upset with the rose bush that too is understandable. And the one who has blood in his hands and fire in his eyes, how would he be able to see the roses. He will not be able to see the roses. To him even the roses have turned into thorns. There are people who are contrary to this also, those who look at the roses and become so overwhelmed that the thorns can’t even be seen by them. For them, slowly and gradually even the thorns, as they are the guards for the rose flowers, they become beloved not enemies.
To look at life there is a positive perspective and a negative one. Even while approaching a great master you can do either one. Either you view with a negative perspective, then a thousand flaws will be seen by you. You will find thousand flaws. This should not happen, this should not happen. But what will you gain by it - just think about it. Nobody called you to ask your opinion anyway as to what should happen and what should not happen. And the one who gives his opinion without being asked for is stupid. Who asked you whether a rose bush should have thorns or should not. You had come, you could have taken nectar from the roses, could have taken fragrance from roses, could have danced with the roses, could have sung songs for the roses, could have become like the roses, could have become roses. But, you missed the opportunity, you kept an account of the thorns.
Next to a great master if you possess a positive perspective, only then a connection takes place. If you have the slightest negative perspective, then not to speak of any connection taking place, any future possibility of the connection taking place also is destroyed.
Despiteful to master and defiant to saints, despitefully shall you waste life.
And by dishonoring masters, by defying saints, by criticizing them what will you get! Your life would be wasted.
Some one else's woman and palace, pray tell, have what special quality!
And people keep running after worthless things. And toward the worthless things they have quite a positive perspective. If it is some one else's woman, then she seems to be very beautiful. Her flaws are not visible. If it is some one else's mansion - it seem very beautiful. It's flaws are not visible. Whether or not this palace's owner can eve sleep at night, people do not even try to find out. This beautiful woman with whose looks you are mesmerize; what is the shape of her man, you have absolutely no idea. When the shape has become misshapen, you have no idea.
You look at worthless things with quite a positive perspective. You should understand this, these are two aspects of the same man. The one who looks at the worthless things with a positive perspective, that man will look at the meaningful things with a negative perspective. These are two aspects of the same coin. And the man who looks at worthless things with a negative perspective that man looks at the meaningful things with a positive perspective. Both the things are present in all.
That talent that you possess is a two edged sword. You slash wrong and save right. But some people slash the right and save the wrong. So the sword can also do that. Carefully thing twice before you take step in this life. If you begin to entangle in the worthless then worry about cutting it off. Make use of reasoning. Pick up you sword, and if you get the slightest fragrance of the meaningful, put aside your sword and shield. Take a dive there.
Some one else's woman and palace, pray tell, have what special quality!
What would you find. In this outer chase after women, after men, after wealth, after a post, what would be the virtue? What would be the gain? Whoever has ever had it!
Intoxicated, letting lust overtake your body - you give up elixir, take poison.
And more you will be filled with sexuality and more you become intoxicated, Intoxicated, letting lust overtake your body, and the more this poison of longing, poison of desire permeates your body, you body tissues, the more you would have trouble. You would become more and more incapable of taking elixir. You give up elixir, take poison, and elixir was obtainable, but people have opted fort poison.
The fact is that it is a matter of the manner of drinking, a matter of the outlook on drinking - poison transforms into elixir and elixir transforms into poison. It is this world that you have gotten - and the same that Buddha has. It is this world that you have gotten - and the same that Dariya has. But in this very world Dariya successfully found divine - you kept collecting trash. In this very world Buddha attained to nirvana - what are you attaining? The world is the same, in this very one, someone drinks elixir, someone else poison. It all depends on your outlook on how to partake the drink - it is matter of style and manner of drinking.
Do you not realize thing of the day, toward which each moment she plans treachery.
And just think, death is approaching nearer each moment. All the time her arrow keeps coming nearer and nearer. She is just waiting and prowling for you. In which moment her naked sword would slice your neck asunder, nothing is known! Will tomorrow happen or not it is not known. And even then you are entangled unnecessarily. Even the death does not succeed in awakening you! How deep your slumber must be!
Without lotus feet you will drown,
And the one who has not learnt to open his eyes in the light of a master, the one who has not learnt to bow in the feet of a master and the one who has not surrendered his hand in the hands of a master, he will drown.
will suffer and not even be able to fathom the depth.
you will bob in deep water, you will suffer and won't be able to fathom this lake - this beautiful mystical lake (mansarovar) of life. Some people have been able to fathom it. The ones who have, sit near them, vie for their proximity. Fear not! Fear is natural, because to sit near them means a kind of death, the death of ego. And when the ego dies only then your innermost can shine forth. When ego breaks then the innermost emerges.
When I effaced on you, I became eternally alive.
I have attained to immortality after mortality.
The one who has learnt to efface himself in the path of truth, in the path of divine ...
When I effaced on you, I became eternally alive.
He has attained to eternal life.
I have attained to immortality after mortality.
Only that is the secret. Being happens after the effacement. Immortality after mortality! The one who has nullified oneself, the Whole ascends into one.
When I effaced on you, I became eternally alive.
I have attained to immortality after mortality.
And the nullification is not just this way or that, not just a little bit, not partial; total. Absolutely nothing remains, then only satsang happens.
By the morning you did not even leave, O morning breeze!
The memorial of moth's brilliance bunched up was the ash.
Moth does nullify itself, but by the time the morning arrives, even its ash is blown away by the wind - even that does not remain.
By the morning you did not even leave, O morning breeze!
The memorial of moth's brilliance bunched up was the ash.
At the minimum it could have let the ash remain behind. A memory would have lingered. But no, by the time the morning arrives, the wind blows that too away. Moth burns at the night itself, by the time the morning happens, its ash blows away also. And only then, in that unprecedented moment, when you are not, the appearance of divine happens, the descent happens.
Dariya says: without devotional song to truth, you waste life while weeping.
Do become aware. Do make arrangement to efface yourself. That arrangement is the devotional song. Devotional song means the one in which you immerse and efface yourself. Devotional song means the one in which you do not remain.
Dariya says: without devotional song to truth, you waste life while weeping.
'Birdie, which direction will you fly!' think a little. Stop for a moment to do a rethinking.
O wise people! trod this impenetrable path.
O the people of thinking and understanding! "O wise people! trod this impenetrable path." if you really are the ones with thinking and understanding, if you are wise - then come along, walk on this path that is unwalkable. Let us search this infinite. Let us attain to this unknown and unknowable. Let us walk on this great journey, on the pilgrimage.
A plethora of grieves tried hard to teach me.
I, for my entire life, though, did not learn to sigh.
Tapping my shoulder, in the grave says the Death:
'Do startle now, O traveler! you are home at last.'
Lesson in love-academy was the same for all.
Some felt gratitude and some others felt just lamentation.
I am in love with you, Saki, whether or not you give me the wine.
I was overjoyed with your parlance.
With the arrival of morning wine, wow Allah, comes cheer and the high.
Religious leaders came, and then prophet and then Allah.
This world is the same, it just a matter of intelligence. Raise a little capability for intelligence. And my meaning for intelligence is not intellect. My meaning for intelligence is: discernment, luminosity. Intellect means: read lots of scriptures and books and accumulate lot of information, that is intellect, cerebration. And if you investigate life, understand life; not with argumentation, not with scriptures; with encounter, with experience of life. Then something else arises: intelligence.
There is much difference between intelligence and intellect. In intellect there is nothing to do with heart, and in intelligence only heart is the basis. In intelligence, the mind caters to the heart, it comes to the aid of the heart. And in intellect the heart is stifled and the one that should have been the slave - the mind - establishes itself as the master. The mind is dangerous as the master, as a servant it is very useful. In intelligence, the mind is the servant; in intellect, the mind is the master.
A plethora of grieves tried hard to teach me.
I, for my entire life, though, did not learn to sigh.
And the life is really trying hard to teach. There are so many pains, but even then you can’t learn even to sigh. The life teaches and you do not learn. If you sigh deeply then with that very sighing a prayer would arise. If you see the pains in the life properly, in that very observance a yearning for divine would arise.
A plethora of grieves tried hard to teach me.
I, for my entire life, though, did not learn to sigh.
Tapping my shoulder, in the grave says the Death:
'Do startle now, O traveler! you are home at last.'
But even when death makes its appearance, there are some who would not awaken no matter what.
A man was dying, must have been a 'Marwari,' the wife is sitting nearby, the is the last hour. The marwari asked, "Chunnu's mama, where is Chunnu?" Chunnu's mom thought that he is thinking about the son. The older son is name Chunnu. Must have been Chunni Lal Sethiya[1][1] or such, Chunnu being the nick name. She said, "Don't fret, don't worry, Chunnu is seated right next to you, on that side of bed." "And where is Munnu?" She said, ""Munnu is also seated, you don't worry." "And where is Chhunnu?" And the wife said, "You take complete rest ...", the old man started to get up. Then he said, "All are here! Then who is running the store?" On the death bed! And so saying he fell down and died.
He was not asking because of love as to where is Chunnu, or where is Munnu or where is Chhunnu. This has nothing to do with love. Is the store running or not? Who is looking after the store? "So, nincumpoofs, have you come here having left the store to employees?!"
On this side the life is withering away, on that side still the ideas about running the store are coming up. No, there are very few who yearn even in death.
Tapping my shoulder, in the grave says the Death:
'Do startle now, O traveler! you are home at last.'
But where is that? Neither the life makes you startled nor the death make you startled - your slumber is very deep. If you do satsang, then maybe you will awaken.
There are only three ways to awaken in this life. One way is the life, that is the most effective way. But we have lived so many times that we have become accustomed. The life keeps making all kinds of noise, we do not even hear. Our condition is like the man who works at a railway station. He can’t hear the noise of the trains, he sleeps there itself very easily.
I have a friend. He is an agent of some company and the only thing he does is travel. He can’t sleep at home. He says, "Unless there is clang and clash of the trains, I can’t sleep." When he goes to some other town, he does not stay at a hotel, he stays at the station itself. He has to have that much agitation. The whole life he has spent traveling, that has now become a part of his habit. The same way you have lived many times, hence you miss the life. You have become habituated. And many a times you have died also - the second way is death, perhaps the death may awaken you. But you have died innumerable times. So, you have become habituated of the death also. Now that leaves only the third way - a true master, Sat Guru. You have never been to a Sat Guru. Because, had you gone to him then you would have been naught. You took births many times, died many times - only kept dodging Sat Guru. So there is only one way left that you surrender to some Sat Guru.
O wise people! trod this impenetrable path.
You surrender to Sat Guru and everything will come of its own accord.
With the arrival of morning wine, wow Allah, comes cheer and the high.
Religious leaders came, and then prophet and then Allah.
Everything comes by itself.
I say to you, so that you can understand. Get alert now, this time.
How many times did you miss, Dariya says do not miss this time. "Get alert now, this time," do get alert this time, "I say to you, so that you can understand," do listen, do understand, I say to you again and again, "Get alert now, this time," how much have you missed. This time get jolted, do not miss. This time, accept the challenge, awaken. What Dariya says to you, the same I say unto you: "Get alert now, this time."
No grass-clumps nor thorns nor stones are there ...
You have to go on that journey where neither grass-shrub, twigs - as are used during fire ceremony (yajna), or used during worship ritual (pooja) or scripture study ...
No grass-clumps nor thorns nor stones are there ...
There are not statues of stone, not even stones are there. That is the kind of expedition we have to go on ...
No trees- forest-shrub ...
There is neither shrub nor holy banyan tree nor any other kind of shrub that can be offered during pooja, for example, tulsi (the sacred basil plant) etc.
"No Vedants nor Koran nor officiating priests are there," neither there is Vedants, nor Koran nor other books. "Nor officiating priests are there" and your so called scholars and officiating priests are not there, the web of words is not there, web of principles is not there. "Without ink the characters excel," there certainly is written something but it is not written in ink. There certainly is a sound happening, but that sound is not of word, it is of void. There certainly is some melodious note, some music, but that is not the music produced on a lute, it is not the note with physical vibration, there the Omkar is resounding.
"There is no river nor sea nor Ganges," there is neither an ocean, nor a river nor Ganges, "only the brightness of knowing," there is but brightness of the ultimate knowing, nothing but brightness, an ocean of brightness, a river of brightness, the Ganges of brightness.
"Neither there is Ganapati (elephant-head god), nor Fanapati (god with multiple heads of serpent) nor Brahma (god of creation)." Neither there is Ganapati, Ganesh nor Fanapati, serpent god. There is no Brahma, god of creation either. "There is no groom for creation." there is neither any creator nor any creation. All is calm and all is void and all is quiet. There is nothing but brightness. Embodiment of light is divine. The one there is what used to be before the creation and will also be after the creation. No dream is there.
"Outside of paradise, mortal world and world below the earth," there is neither heaven, nor hell nor the mortal world. That is outside of all three. "there is the sovereign king," and that is the real ownership. There itself will you become emperor. There itself you will become sovereign king. There itself will you become swami (a master of oneself.) Before then you would remain a beggar. If you live in hell, or live in the paradise or live on the earth - in all places you will remain beggar.<
Do you see it, on the earth we already know that all are nothing but beggars. We are begging,, may we get this, may we get that. The one who begs is a beggar. The desire is the beggary. And in hell you can even imagine -the condition must be worse. It was so in the past, nothing could be said about the present. Condition here itself is so bad. Who knows, perhaps it may even be somewhat better in the hell.
I have heard: a political leader died in Delhi. He was political leader, an important political leader. His tomb was constructed in Rajghat (funeral place for VIP's in Delhi.)) Hence, for him to go to heaven was absolutely certain. The ones who establish connections here - they also establish there. The ones who know the knack of establishing connections - do they care whether here or there - they establish every place. To go to heaven was absolutely certain. He, right from the beginning, started off with a ticket to heaven. But the first stop he made was in the hell. Satan was really surprised. Satan said, "Mr. leader, sir, you have the ticket directly to heaven - how you got that, I would not even enquire - but the ticket if for heaven. Why do you stop here?" The leader said, "It is like this. I wish to experience a little peace and ecstasy before I go to heaven. I wish to become a little used to being in heaven. So I stay in the hell for a little while." Satan was really surprised. He said, "What are you talking about?" He said, "Yes, compared to Delhi, this is more peaceful. Delhi was a difficult place. Not a moment of peace ... how is it possible to meditate! Someone is pulling on breaches and someone ran away with turban. To meditate, to sit down, I had no place. To be in Delhi and to meditate! So, I will rest in hell for a while, will meditate, will experience pleasure for a while. Then the next stop is in heaven. All of a sudden, too much of a pleasure, perhaps I may or may not be able to take. So much of peace I may perhaps like or may not like. So, allow me to stop here for a while." It used to be that the condition in hell was bad. I can’t say about the present. Presently, the condition on earth is much worse. On earth there are beggars, in hell too there are beggars, naturally. Because wherever there is anguish, there is beggary. But even in heaven there are beggars. You pick up your epics and see, you will find out. Even in heaven there is much beggary. Even there is quite competition. There are parables in the epics - those parables are significant that even deities from heaven appear on the earth. They do bad things with some ascetics' women and leave. Deities from heaven! That is an epitome in beggary. They might become bored with the apsaras (the ever young beauties of paradise) so just to have a different taste they might be coming on the earth! Got bored with Urvashi (an apsara, much referenced in epics) etc., so they decided: "let us go, let us just meet Hema Malini (a star of Indian films.) These are goddesses and gods? Goddesses also have the same condition, it is not any better than gods. Because there is equality. There the gods and goddesses are all equal. It is not what is on the earth that a god may do anything and people would say, "Oh well! they are men." When women do something then a problem arises. When a wedding takes place, we try to ascertain the virginity of the girl. No one bothers about the boy's virginity. Boys are boys. And girl is not girl! A girl also is a girl. However, there is discrimination here. Here man has really kept the woman restrained. But there is no discrimination in heaven. So, goddesses also make appearances. It is not only that Indra (the chief deity) becomes bored of Urvashi, Urvashi too becomes bored of Indra. So the stories are that once upon a time Urvashi got very bored. She came upon the earth and live with Pururava. She got tired of prolonged indulgence with the male deities. The desire to indulge with humans arose.
This is nothing but beggary. This is not any different. Not an iota of difference. This seems to be just the extrapolation of this very earth. Just its extension. It may be slightly more refined than this. For example, people who are well off, do not live in the middle of a city, they live in a suburb. So you may regard heaven as suburb. There is a little convenience. You can grow a little garden. But the same fears and the same anxieties are there. The moment some sage or saint does some excessive meditation, Indra's Indra-seat begins to quake. These are high class politicking! And Indra becomes scared. Immediately he sends beautiful females to go and torment the sage. This sage's majesty is getting too far ahead. Because if he earns too much merit, he could become the Indra. "Then what would happen to my throne?"
This is not too much different. This is the exact same thing as was in Delhi. Do you see! Recently Charan Singh organized a rally of farmers. Translation: Morarji's seat started to quake. Now he is scared, that now take Charan Singh quickly back into the cabinet - now do some maneuver! This sage-saint is getting ahead! Indra also gets scared. The epics are full of stories, Indra getting scared. The moment some sage or saint did sacrifice, did some fast ... now, these poor sages and saints, all they are doing is sitting and meditating, starving with closed eyes. Why are they anxious? Because of them? Even in heaven if this kind of worry persists, then isn't heaven worthless.
Hence, the ones who have known, have not yearned for heaven. Only we have, among all the languages on the earth, a word: "moksha (the ultimate in liberation)." In no other language of the world is there word synonym with the word, moksha. In the world, all the religions that grew outside India -Christianity, Islam, Judaism - have heaven and hell, only two words. There is no such word as moksha. The concept of moksha is a fantastic one. Hell is all pain, heaven is all pleasure. But we realized that the pleasure and pain are not two separate things. They are two aspects of the same coin. Hence, heaven and hell can’t be too far apart. They might be in the same neighborhood. There might be a film-like wall in the middle. Because, where there is pleasure, there has to be pain. Otherwise, there won't be any feeling of pleasure. And where there is pain, there has to be pleasure. Otherwise, there won't be any feeling of pain. So, do understand that even in hell there is pleasure - it may be one percent, 99 percent may be pain. And even in heaven there is pain - it may be one percent, 99 percent may be pleasure. But both can only be together. This is the straight forward psychology.
Hence, we searched for a third state - that of moksha. The meaning of moksha is: there is neither pain nor there is pleasure. Then what might be there? There may be the ultimate peace, void, silence. That very silence we have termed as "Brahman", that very silence we have termed as truth: satyam, shivam, sundaram (truth, eternity, beauty.))) That very thing we have termed sat-chit-anand. (truth, existence, bliss.)
Outside of paradise, mortal world and world below the earth, there is the sovereign king.
And only after attaining that, after attaining moksha, will you become the master, before then you can’t be the master.
Dariya says what you see there is the truth ...
And when that state arrives when neither pain nor pleasure but the ultimate peace pervades, then you understand:
Dariya says what you see there is the truth ...
what you see there is truth.
O saints! think about it.
If you really have to think about some thing, then think about this, O saints! O wise people! trod this impenetrable path. If there is anything worth seeing, it is nothing but truth.
There is this ardent desire that once I reach your place of splendor.
I have one thousand eyes and I gaze the Lover with all of them.
Let only the eyes remain. And the light that surrounds all around is the beloved, is the lover. Only his search is going on. Divine is moksha, the liberation. Divine is the ultimate freedom.
If you have to think, then think about such a thing; if you have to yearn for something, then yearn such a thing; if you find something worth bringing to your awareness, then that is the only thing. Meditate on it, contemplate on it. Then perhaps this life may not be wasted as the rest of the lives have gone worthless.
Get alert now,
this time.
I say to you, so
that you can understand.
O wise people!
trod this impenetrable path.
Enough for today.
