| COMPUTER COURSE FOR DOCTORS : IT IS ONE DAY COURSE WHICH TRY TO GIVE YOU INSIGHT TO THE WORKING OF COMPUTERS AND PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE IS IMPARTED TO MAKE YOU COMPUTER LITERATE.This course was held for the first time in LUDHIANA and was huge success. WORKSHOP ON BASIC COMPUTER AND INTERNET HELD AT LUDHIANA This workshop was organised by “ I.A.P- LUDHIANA DISTRICT BRANCH”. IT WAS ORGANISED ON NOV 19 , 2000. This workshop was held for doctors, mainly pediatricians to give them basic knowledge on computers and internet and sensitize them to vast usage of computers and internet for general and academics. 33 doctors registered for this . Registration was done for limited seats and prior registration done on first come first serve basis. Rs 350/- were charged from each of them. 2 books were given to them on demand basis ( learning guide on windows & learning guide to internet –costing Rs 100 /-). The workshop was held in one of renowned computer school “ CCIT computer education center “ at model town , ludhiana. COURSE CO-ORDINATOR DR SUKHMEET SINGH was the course co-ordinator. It was organised by IAP-LUDHIANA DISTRICT BRANCH , Dr Surinder Likhi as President and Dr Rajinder Gulati as General Secretary. REGISTERED CANDIDATES Out of these 33 , 23 were pediatricians and rest were from other specialities ; plastic surgeon, physicians, gyaenacologists, dentists and general practitioners. Only 6 had there computers but only 2 were using it where as for others their children were using it . 90% of them had no prior useful knowledge of conputers. This batch was of mixed seniority ranging from retired professor to residents . WORKSHOP Total of 8 hours were alloted. Out of which 3 hours were for lectures and rest for on hand computer skills. It started at 8:30 am . for first 2 hours 4 lectures were delivered ( general computers, windows, ms office and internet ) fifth lecture was delivered by dr vijay agg ( delhi ) as guest lecture on “ use of computers and internet for doctors”. It gave them outline of what to expect while learning computer skill . after this 6 hours were spent on computers . 16 computers were in use for these docs . 1 COMPUTER FOR 2 DOCTORS. W in first session there were 4 skill stations which dealt with general computers, windows , ms word and internet . all was explained by faculty on computers and delegates were asked to proform few simple tasks with their own hands including telling them to handle mouse effectively. In second session 5 skill stations were kept on internet, e mail , medical websites & softwares, powerpoint & excel. 30 minutes were awarded for each skill stations. One faculty member was incharge for one skill station who first showed them how to go about and then gave them chance to work on it on their own. GUEST LECTURE & INAUGRATION The guest lecture was kept at hotel where 80 doctors were invited including 33 registered ones. Lecture was delivered by DR VIJAY AGGARWAL from delhi who gave briefs on internet use for doctors and useage of computers for clinics and nursing homes . We kept inaugral function at this time cos we wanted to start workshop at exact time in the morning . DR S C AHUJA principal dayanand medical college was chief guest . the function was for 3 hours including lecturs, inaugration and lunch. We started at 1 pm and finished at 4 pm and all registered delegates were back at school at 4 pm and continued their skill stations till 6:30 pm. FREE 1 WEEK TRAINING & FREE 20 HR INTERNET We gave free 1 week training for all delegates at the same center from 20 nov to 27 nov. 20 docs utilised this facility which finished on 27 nov 2000. The faculty gave full cooperation and everybody enjoyed and gained from this exercise . without this 1 week practice the gain would have been less. Glide gave free 20 hours internet surfing and training and 80 % of delegates will be utilising this facility . this was given to make them efficient in surfing . I have planed half day free ( 5 hours ) internet training course with glide/dishnet , which will be finalised in next 2 weeks time ( it is on 14 jan 2001). this will be the final leg of this programme . SUBSIDISED MONTHLY FEE :Computer center gave all delegates concessional fee offer of Rs 650 /- per month to learn anything of their choice. aNd home tutor facility was also given for Rs 2000/ - per month. EVALUATION We had given them evaluation form to give their comments . everybody praised the programme though many said they wanted more time to learn . on further evaluation free 1 week gave them enough time to practice. Even the one who was using computer extensively was praising the workshop cos many of his doubts were cleared. He use to learn on his own on his computer. | PALS COURSE : IAP-PALS Group is holding Certified PALS Courses in india for last 6 years. It was started in 1995. First course was held in PGI, Chandigarh under DR.SUNIT SINGHI guidance . International course advisor DR JANKIRAMAN was there to supervise . Incidently the first INSTRUCTOR COURSE was also held at same venue. The course includes lectures, case discussions in small groups and practical training on manikins.The topics covered are ; Early recognition of respiratory failure & shock and their management with best possible means available.It also includes airway management ( with special emphasis on endotracheal intubation ), arrythmia recognition & management, neonatal resuscitation, Introsseous infusions and Basic Life Support ( CPR & Choking Management ).SKILL STATIONS are kept to impart practical training on Endotrachial intubation manikin, arrythmia recognition on arrythmia generator, CPR Manikins and Introsseous infusion simulators.This Course also includes written test as well as evalution on case scenerios. In written test it is mandatory to get 84% marks . BUT THE WHOLE TEACHING IS TOWARDS IMPROVING YOUR SKILLS IN MANAGING A SICK CHILD . EVERY INSTRUCTOR ACTS AS FACILITATOR RATHER THAN TEACHER AND MAKE SURE YOU GAIN MAXIMUM OUT OF IT . TESTING IS JUST ONE PART OF THIS WHOLE EXERCISE. TPN CALCULATIONS TPN (Total parental nutrition ) is provided to premature newborns or very sick neonate who is not able to accept oral feeds. The calculations of fluid is difficult and long process. I have developed a shortcut to calculate these fluids from a ready reference chart . The calculations are based on the recommendations followed at P.G.I CHANDIGARH NEONATOLOGY DEPARTMENT.
