St Patty Day

Dear American soldier,

You don't know me, but I know who you are, and I will not forget. As you pack your green duffel bags, press your desert camouflage fatigues, polish your boots and kiss your families goodbye, please take these words with you.

Thank you, Thank you for answering the call to arms. Thank you for being fit and young and brave and willing. Thank you for loving freedom enough to put your own life on the line to defend it.

Pay no attention to Sean Penn and Sheryl Crow and Baghdad Babs. Tune out the half-naked loonies and Flower Power leftovers and people like Jane Fonda.

Stand tall, Fight hard. And know there are legions of Americans who are boundlessly grateful for what you have volunteered to do. We know who you are. We will not forget. And we will pray every day for your safe return. Hoo-ah........

Michelle Malkin

Marine's letter home

Dear Ma and Pa,

Am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But am getting so I like to sleep late.

Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, they get warm water.  Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc...but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food.

But tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit between two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon, when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.

We go on "route" marches, which the Platoon Sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it is not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys gets sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.

The country is nice, but awful flat. The Sergeant is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Capt is like the school board. Majors and Colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing.  I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk and don't move. And it ain't shooting at you, like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get into this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,
Gail

May you always have…
Walls for the winds, A roof for the rain,
Tea beside the fire, Laughter to cheer you,
Those you love near you, And all your heart might desire!

A wife prayer for her husband and herself

Dear Lord,

Give me greatness of heart to see, The difference between duty and his love for me. Give me the understanding so that I may know, When duty calls him he must go. Give me a task to do each day, To fill the time when he's away. When he goes out to sea,Please bring him safely home to me. When he must fly so high,Watch over him and keep him high. When he's in a foreign land, Keep him safe in your loving hand. When duty is in the field,Protect him and be his shield. And Lord, when deployment is so long, Please stay with me and keep me strong

May you never make an enemy
When you could make a friend —
Unless you meet a fox among your chickens

Finally someone says it right

You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a award to anyone who killed an American, any American. So an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is, so they would know when they found one. An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.  An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person the pursuit of happiness. An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other Nation in the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was overrun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11,Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2002, earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists. So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American

Hail To The Chief

This is a small, but true story to give you an idea of the kind of man and the kind of woman we have in the White House right now. As you may know, the President and Mrs. Bush visited the Washington Burn Center on Friday 14 September. Among those they visited was LTC Brian Bridewell, who was badly burned in the Pentagon attack. Mrs. Bush went into Brian's room; spoke to him for about a minute, all the time as if they had been lifelong acquaintances. She then turned to Brian's wife Mel who at this time had been at the hospital for probably 2 1/2 days, and apparently, according to Mel herself, was dirty, grimy and had blood on her shirt. Mrs. Bush hugged Mel for what Mel said seemed like an eternity, just as if Mel were one of her closest family members. Mrs. Bush then told Brian and Mel that there was "someone" there to see him. The President then walked in, stood by Brian's bedside, asked Brian how he was doing, told him that he was very proud of them both and that they were his heroes. The President then saluted Brian. Now, at this point in time, Brian is bandaged up pretty well. His hands are burned very badly as well as the back of him from the head down. His movements were very restricted. Upon seeing the President saluting him, Brian began to slowly return the salute, taking, from the accounts so far, about 15-20 seconds to get his hand up to his head. During all of this, 15-20 seconds, President Bush never moved, never dropped his salute. The President dropped his salute only when Brian was finished with his, and then gave Mel a huge hug for what also probably seemed like an eternity. No further comments.

As a note to those of you who might not be familiar with military protocol, the subordinate normally initiates a salute and will hold it until the superior officer returns the salute. In the above incident, President Bush acted in the role of the subordinate to show his respect and high regard for the injured man. Now we know why the Marine helicopter honor guardsmen salute the President when he gets off Marine One, then turn and cover the President's back when he leaves the helicopter! President Bush has respect for our military - and they for him.

Irish Soda Bread
Contributed by Jennie
This bread doesn't use yeast and there's a good reason! Yeast doesn't make the soft wheat that grows in Ireland rise very well
. You can make do with 3 cups of white flour instead of the two + one mix in the recipe
2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup white sugar 1 1/2 cups buttermilk or plain yogurt 3/4 cup raisins 2 eggs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Combine dry ingredients. Mix eggs and buttermilk. Add to the dry ingredients. Add raisins and mix. Pour dough onto lightly floured board and knead 10 times (fun for the kids!). Shape into a round loaf, adding flour if necessary. Place in a lightly greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour or until the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped!
