Makassar (formerly known as Ujung Pandang) is the best connected city in Sulawesi, and is the communications gateway for all of eastern Indonesia. It can be reached by air or by sea. The national flight carriers Garuda Indonesia Airways (GA) and Merpati Airlines (MZ) and also private airline like Lion Air,  Mandala air line, serves seven times flight carriers a day from all major cities of Indonesia: Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, etc.
 
When is the best time to visit Sulawesi? You should know that in general we have two seasons in Indonesia; dry season and rainy season. The rainy season is normally from November to April, with a peak around January/February.  While the dry season is normally from  May to September. However, this does not mean that you cannot visit Sulawesi during the wet season. It only means that the chance for us to get rain is higher but the land would be much greener during this season. Particularly If you are going to do trekking or are interested to see the unique ceremonies in Tana Toraja,  we suggest you visit between June to September because the land is drier and the ceremonies are mostly held during this time.  If you are going to dive in Bunaken or other spots, we suggest you to visit April - mid-June and mid-September - mid-October.  
How can I get to Kalimantan? You can reach Balikpapan, East Kalimantan from sulawesi. Bouraq air lines has a daily flight from Makassar city to Balikpapan.  Merpati airlines flies three times a week.  You can also reach Balikpapan directly from Singapore with Silk Air that flies directly from Singapore four times a week, that is on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.  
How can I get to Irian Jaya? Since Makassar is the gateway to eastern Indonesia, most people fly to Makassar first and then fly Biak or to Jayapura, the capital of Irian Jaya Province.  There is a daily flight from Makassar to these two destinantions.  Merpati Airlines flies daily to Jayapura.  On Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday Merpati Flies two times a day. Garuda  Airways flies to Jayapura every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.  Merpati Airlines flies to Biak  five times a week, that is on Monday,  Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Garuda flies to Biak  four times a week, that is on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
What do I need to bring along when travelling to Indonesia? When packing, keep in mind that you will be in the tropics, but that it gets chilly in the higher elevations, and sometimes over the water. Generally you want to dress light and wear natural fibers that absorb perspiration. Make sure you have adequate sun protection (sun screen, hat, glasses, etc.).A heavy sweater is almost a must, as are sturdy shoes.
Where are the best spots to do snorkeling or scuba-diving in Indonesia? There are plenty places to do snorkeling and scuba diving in Indonesia.  However, the most popular spots for scuba diving and snorkeling in Indonesia is Bunaken. Doing scuba Diving in this marine garden would be  a great experience for you.          Other spots are Togian Islands in Central Sulawesi, Tukang Besi Island in South East Sulawesi, and Selayar Island in South Sulawesi. They are are less popular  but no less beautiful.  For your further information, the last diving spot we mentioned above might be the least popular among all the diving spots in Indonesia and might be the least known among divers, but most divers who have explored this spot, consider it as the best diving spot in Indonesia.
 
Where are the best places observing the Indonesia's wildlife? Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Irian Jaya offer wonderful wildlife to explore. Sulawesi's endemic animals are Anoa, Babirusa or pig deer,  kus kus bear, maleo and hornbill birds, etc. . Kalimantan has the orangutan and also different species of birds including hornbills, While Irian jaya Irian Jaya has the birds of paradise. It depends on what you are interested in observing.  
 
Where are the best places to find wild orchids in Indonesia? Indonesia has thousands and thousands of  wild orchids species. Kalimantan is considered to be the richest island in Indonesia in orchid species, Sulawesi has about two thousand species, and Irian Jaya has more than three thousand species of orchids.           The blooming season for the orchids is between November up to February.
