Sulawesi once known as celebes is a wonderful island which its total land area is 227.000 sguare kms, a little smaller than england and scotland combined.The shape of the island is like an orchid with long and narrow peninsulas. No point of the main land is more than 90 kms away from the sea. This makes the island has a long coast line. Most of the land are montaneous in nature. The oldest date archeological deposits are found in caves in limestone hills near maros, about 30 kms from makassar the capital south sulawesi province. The probable older deposits, people tools and flake, has been collected from thes river terraces in the wallanae valley between soppeng and bone, including the bones of extinct giant pigs and elephants. |

People in south sulawesi consist of four major ethnic group, Torajanesse is very well known for its specific culture, we can see from their traditional house and funeral ceremony which still exist untill now. Makassar, bugis, and mandar are known as heroic seafarers in war and peace with their traditonal sailing vessels that sailing the ocean from the archipelago to the north of australia, the in the pacific ocean until the west coast of Africa. |
