Sir Leonard Woolley
Sir Charles Leonard Woolley
Sir Charles Leonard Woolley (1880-1960) was a British archaeologist and has provided the greatest insight into life in Ur. He excavated the site of Ur over 12-years, 1922-1934. From his work we now know the Sumerians were skilled in construction with mud-brick, made clothing and jewellery, used stones and made pottery. They believed in many gods and the afterlife. The Sumerian city-states were individual monarchies.
The Sumerians worked with metals and made and played musical instruments. They were also the first people to live in cities and have social classes of the farmers and non-producing elite.
