Religion and Burial
Inanna- Goddess of Heaven
Worship of the gods (called dingir) was an important part of Sumerian life as they believed the gods controlled every aspect of their lives. The Sumerian belief system was characterised by polytheism (many gods), animism (the gods could take the shape of animals) and anthropomorphism (the gods changed their appearances from animal to animal).
The Sumerians built temples called Ziggurats, which were made up of stepped platforms. The gods were fed, clothed and sheltered here, as was the Sumerians responsibility.
The Sumerians buried their dead. There were large death pits where poorer Sumerians were buried. If they were richer, great tombs, with detailed archetecture, were constructed where they were buried with piles of riches.
