First-half Farce Fires Foresters

Newport 0  Bashley 2

Bashley were gifted their win at St Georges Park on Tuesday evening, after a less than convincing first half display. Newport were chasing the match within the first twenty five minutes and seldomed looked like  getting the points inspite of  long spells of second half pressure.

The match started without any real conviction from either side. The first chance our visitors has saw them in front on 14 minutes. Following a good run from Matt Graves which was ended on the edge of the area by a trip, skipper AARON COOK took the free kick quickly and fired the ball into the corner through a disorganised and unprepared wall to catch Newport off guard. At the other end Taffy Richardson headed over when well placed, from a cross from Danny Hatcher. The match was now 24 minutes in, Bashley doubled their advantage, taking control of the game. A cross from Graeme Gee was nodded down by Danny Gibbons and the persistence of MARTIN WHIDDETT turned Mark Isaacson in the ‘port defence and placed his shot into the corner to give Simon Arthur no chance.

Ashley Wright had a shot saved by Mike Hookway and Richardson went into the book for a foul on former Newport player Graeme Gee. Simon Arthur kept the home side in the game with a good save from Ollie Cherrett following a cross from Andy Culliford. The Bash took off  Cook just before half time, sensing that they could defend the lead that they had.

Newport made a double change at half time, to the delight of the now disgruntled crowd, who could see what and why, was wrong with the first half display. The match was only a minute into the second half and saw Danny Hatcher firing his shot just wide.  The tempo had picked up and the tackles were flying in, Glenn Howes was cautioned for a very late challenge on Connolly and was lucky to escape a second caution, if not a straight red card, for a two footed lunge on Gee ten minutes later.

Hatcher again went close as the ‘port began to drive forward in search of the goal that would launce them into finding an equaliser. Gibbons shot towards goal in a now rare Bashley attack but Arthur saved. The Bash keeper  Hookway was the busier of the two and made two good late saves, notably from Richardson, and then another from Jamie O’Rourke. Richardson, who had stepped in front of the Bashley glovesman at a corner did get the ball in the net 5 minutes from time but the whistle had already gone for obstruction on Hookway.

Ainslie cooks up unlikely win for Stamford

STAMFORD  1   NEWPORT  0

Newport’s trip to Stamford had all the signs that it was to be a day to forget within 30 minutes of reaching the mainland.  The coach that was carrying the players and a number of supporters broke down before they got to eastleigh and the replacement coach’s heater was stuck on hot.

At a chilly Newflame Stadium, Port went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat to a Stamford side missing a number of players through injury and suspension.  A largely poor first half didn't see its first goal attempt until the 14th minute when the home side's McKenzie went close with a header. Five minutes later Jamie O'Rourke came close to opening the scoring, seeing  the stand in keeper Warrecks hold his shot at the second attempt.

A surging run by Stamford’s Edge, evading four tackles to set up a chance for Pritchard whose tame shot caused Simon Arthur no problems. Ten minutes before the break, finding himself upfield following a corner, Adam Lang did well to disposess a hesitant defender but his fierce shot was wide. Two minutes later Taffy "Choco" Richardson saw his shot deflected for a corner. The save of the game saw Simon Arthur at full stretch to deny Ainslie in the 42nd.

In the final minute of the half some good inter play between Richardson, Pilcher and O’Rourke set up a chance for Danny Hatcher but he was unable to extend his recent scoring streak. At the half time break it was  0-0, this was an accurate and fair reflection of the game thus far.

Two minutes after the restart and Glen Howes put Ashley Wright through but he was unable to open the scoring. Ten minutes later a vital saving tackle from Richardson prevented Ainslie from doing the same. On the hour the home side's skipper Peaks, survived what appeared to be a blatant penalty when he brought down Danny Hatcher but the referee, waved play on. The match was there for the taking with the ‘port in control of the game and were forcing a procession of corners and free kicks upfield. Danny Hatcher was unlucky to see his header towards the top near corner palmed away and the same player saw two other shots charged down as the home side soaked up the pressure. A special mention to Simon Pilcher who typified the team’s commitment,  after seeing his shot blocked and end up face down in the mud, he got up and sprinted back to put in a saving tackle in his own penalty area, all within fifteen seconds.

The Islanders  were to rue their failure to convert their pressure into goals in the 73rd minute. A rare home attack down the right, a cross from Nash was not dealt with by an otherwise tight defence and when the ball came back out on the left hand side of the penalty area to Ainslie,  cooking up a treat for the home side. The scoreline could have been doubled three minutes later but for a truly superb tackle from Richardson. The final few minutes saw more corners to the Islanders, but no equaliser was forthcoming.

After the game Tate was disappointed with the result but pleased with the effort his players had put in. Sadly for the “Hatchet man” Danny Hatcher, not only did he not continue his five match run of scoring, but a booking he recieved means he is now suspended for a game.

Team was : Arthur, Buckman, Lang (Barsdell), Holmes, Pilcher, Richardson (A Perry), Keeping, Howes, Hatcher, Wright (Chuddy), O'Rourke.

DR MARTENS LEAGUE CUP 2nd ROUND
EASTLEIGH v NEWPORT IOW
Newport’s attempt at breaking the Eastleigh hoodoo continued at the new re-named Sparshatts Stadium last Wednesday. The ‘port were to put our Southampton rival under intense pressure and will concider themselves unlucky not to have got at least extra-time from the match.

Eastleigh’s Robbie Matthews rediscovered his goalscoring touch scoring both their goals in this  2-1 defeat in the 2nd Round of the Dr Martens League Cup.

The match was only 7minutes old when Eastleigh were awarded a penalty for a trip inside the box from Adam Barsdell. Tyronne Bowers' spot kick was excellently saved by Simon Arthurs in the Newport goal. With half-time approaching and the match evenly balanced the deadlock was broken when Robbie Matthews headed home off a defender. This goal stood despite protests of  two fouls on Simon Arthur, during this scrambled goal.

Newport started the second-half in search of the equaliser which came just after 11 minutes when Danny Hatcher scored from close range, this now extending his remarkable run of scoring in each of the last 5 matches. Seven minutes later Eastleigh were gifted a free-kick after an Eastleigh player made the most a challenge made on him. The resultent free-kick put Eastleigh back in front when Robbie Matthews scored his second goal of the match, nodding the ball home at the far post. Newport fought hard for another equaliser which never came and Eastleigh progressed into the 3rd Round of the Dr Martens League Cup.

DR MARTENS EASTERN DIVISION
CORBY 0  NEWPORT IW  1

adapted from message by Chris Osbourne & Non-League Paper report
.

For anyone who saw the Fleet away game and wondered how we only scored the one there, you could have seen a repeat today (8th November). So many chances (15 attempts on goal) and only one converted, however this goal was enough to take all of the points this time.

The match started with Corby producing a cross come shot in the first minute that was easily dealt with by Simon Arther in the Newport goal.  Danny Hatcher was to beat the offside trap on 6 minutes but shot wide one on one with the keeper. Ashley Wright had a couple of chance and both times shot wide, before a quarter of an hour had passed.  Corby hit back at the mid-point of the first half, Wayne Spencers cross inviting a volley from Lee Vallance, from 6 yards out was to blast his shot sky-wards. Gareth Keeping saw a shot saved from a tight angle and just before half time Ashley  Wright saw a header well saved. In the dying seconds of the half, Corby had an appeal for a penalty turned down following a claim that Arthur had brought down Vallance.

Second half with the wind in our favour, it was almost one way traffic. Two minutes in and Danny Hatcher saw his shot blocked and 5 minutes later had another shot held. On the hour came the breakthrough. A bicycle kick from Taffy in the shadow of the home dugout, was taken to the edge of the area by Ashley Wright and there was Danny “the Hatchet-man” Hatcher, to stick his cross into the net from 15 yards.

A rare home attack in the 75th minute saw the ball in the net but with both the Corby crowd celebrating, a relieved ‘port defence were grateful for an offside flag. Lee Glover, the Corby player-manager  thought he had scored 5 minutes later, instead, a superb finger tip save from Simon Athur preserved the clean sheet. In the final 8 minutes there was still time for goal attempts from Ash (twice), Keeps and Hatch.

Far from plain sailing against a weakened Salisbur

Dr Martens League Cup 1st Round
Newport 3  Salisbury City 2

Newport were to book a place in the  next round of the Dr Martens League Cup following a victory against fellow Eastern Division side Salisbury City. With very much an eye on their  trip to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, a weakened Salisbury City’s line up took the field for this Dr Martens Cup 1st Round tie. The Wiltshire side were to give a good account of themselves as Newport struggled to get going.

Matt Tubbs, was lively throughout and linked well with fellow ex-Magpie Aaron Turner to create a chance that was blocked after 10 minutes. It didn’t take long for Newport to hit back just 3 minutes later, Lee Chudy’s cross found Danny Hatcher whose header was touched over by Andy Burt in the Salisbury goal. Shortly after, Tubbs found himself in a one on one with Newport keeper Simon Arthur, who not for the first time this season saved well.

After 24 minutes, the Islanders took a deserved lead in fortunate circumstances. Newport marksman Ashley Wright turned, ran  and shot, his effort took a wicked deflection off the back of John Purches, sending the ball in the net. Salisbury fought back and within three minutes, Turner had ball in the net but it was ruled out. A few moments later Witt saw his free kick strike the Newport bar. Salisbury were let back into the match following a poor clearence from Arther, Turner making no mistake from this gift to level the score
.
The Whites took the lead after 62 minutes, Turner scoring his second with a right foot shot that flew into Arthur’s bottom right corner.  Newport were to increase the pressure some what and with 76 minutes gone, the ‘port levelled the scores. The Salisbury glovesman looked to have Adam Lang’s low driven free kick covered but the ball slipped through his hands and into the net. The match was 2 minutes away from extra-time, when a somewhat crude tackle from Kevin Bush was correctly adjudged to have brought down Wright and the latest scoring sensation Danny Hatcher made no mistake from the spot for his third goal in three games.

This win see's Newport travel for the first of 2 matches against local rivals Eastleigh. This match will take place on Wednesday 12th November. By some quirk of fate, Newport have been drawn away to Eastleigh in the Hampshire Senior Cup. With them being the 'ports guests on December 27th will make this 4 matches against them before the new year.

Battle to conquer at Hastings ends with "eye"landers win

Dr Martens Eastern Division
Hastings 0  -  Newport IW 2

This was to be a match of two halves. Hastings had much the better of the first half, before Newport dominated the second.  Hastings were to create some good chances and will be ruing these misses. It took just two minutes before  a fine move saw Mitchell's effort from distance being pushed over for an early corner. The same player then saw another long range shot sail over the bar.  On the quarter hour Carl Rook forced ’port keeper, Simon Arthur, into his best save of the match. Rook spun in the area and fired in a left footed shot, which Arthur just managed to block, sending the  ball  just wide of the post.

At the other end, Toal saved a Jon Holmes shot and both Danny Hatcher and Adam Barsdell both missed the target from good positions. Just before half time, Mylie went down on the edge of the box, the referee to decide that he had not been fouled.

Just 2 minutes after the break, Glen Howes pass through the defence for the unmarked Ashley Wright to run on and beat Toal with a left footed shot. Having taken the lead, a Barsdell corner found Richardson,  his shot was smartly tipped over. Then  Alex Perry's right wing cross was headed wide by Wright.

Hastings forced a couple of half chances, Rook heading over a  Mylie free kick and Ringwood firing over from long range. Newport extended their lead in the 67th minute, O'Rourke's cross from the right was deflected into the path of Hatcher, who shot right footed across Toal and into the corner of the net.  As with so often this season, Newport will wonder how they failed to add to their tally before the end. Howes saw a long range effort saved. Wright ran on to Hatcher's flick and shot early and just wide. Wright may have won a penalty, appearing to be pushed as he attempted to connect with Hatcher's low cross. Howes nearly created a third goal, his long range shot was only parried by Toal into the path of Wright, but the keeper was to block Wright's effort at point blank range, possibly with his head.

CANNIE JOINS THE 'PORT

The much sought after striker Stuart Cannie has put  pen to paper and joined Newport.  Steve Tate was very upbeat about the deal that brought him to play at St  Georges Park. "He's an excellent player, somebody who doesn't like to lose, a player that the fans will take  to" . "It is a pity that Today's match has been called off  as I can't wait to get him into the side" he added . Tatey  went on to further comment, " A big part about getting  him here is down to assistant manager Taffy Richardson, he's been  keeping an eye on the situation with Stuart and has got  the rewards for his efforts"

Below is an Aritcle from the Bournemouth Echo and a  picture of Stuart Cannie from the same publication

THE departure of highly-rated hitman Stuart Cannie   from Wimborne Town has sent the non-league  footballing world into a frenzy with a multitude of clubs  bidding for his signature.  Cannies parted company with the Cuthbury club last  week after a series of disciplinary issues led to boss  Paul Arnold finally reaching breaking point with the                Bournemouth-born striker. Alongside Gareth Barnes, the 22-year old had formed   part of one of the most potent forward partnerships in  the Wessex League, the pair netting 14 goals between  them this season.   And despite his penchant for bookings, many managers now see this a golden opportunity to capture a man who could inject new life into their side's campaign, be it a promotion chasing or an injury-hit one.
Since his arrival on the market, Cannie has attracted interest from virtually every local club. If you've got a second (and if you listen to the rumour mill) Bashley, Newport, Brockenhurst, Winchester City, Lymington and New Milton and Christchurch have all expressed their interest in the prized forward.  Bashley boss John Robson, who was due to meet with Cannie last night said: "Paul Arnold had suggested that he come to us and we'd definitely be interested.  "He's a very good player and I'm looking to improve our squad all the time. His discipline may be an issue but he'd be made well aware from the start what we expect of him here."

Fellow Dr Martens League outfit Newport IOW are also in the chase and may hold a trump card in assistant manager Taffy Richardson, the former Magpies captain.
Richardson, assistant to Steve Tate at the Island club, has been tracking Cannie all season and hopes this will be the chance he's been waiting for: "I see a lot of me in Stuart, he loves to win at any cost.  "It's exactly what I was like when I was young and I want to help him learn like I did."Some clubs may be scared off by his attitude but that's exactly the reason I want him but there certainly won't be any pressure from us as it's up to him."

Winchester City appear to have cooled any interest they may have shown, while Brockenhurst would seem to have fallen down the pecking order, despite boss Graham Kemp's proclamation earlier in the week that Cannie was "exactly the sort of player who would enhance any side".
Cannie himself is somewhat flattered by the furore surrounding his switch of clubs: "I've not really spoken properly to anyone yet but it is nice to have so many clubs in for me. I didn't expect it that's for sure.
"I will see what everyone says when I speak to them but it would be nice to move up a level."

Dr Martens Eastern Division
Newport 3  Ashford Town 2

Newport's groundsman Bunny Warrick had worked wonders on the St George's Park pitch to get their Dr Martens Eastern Division Match on. Steve Tate and his team will be glad that he did as it saw Bunny's hard work rewarded with a fine win  in this eventful match with fellow mid-table side Ashford Town. Newport, were  missing Ian Buckman through injury (hamstring) and Danny Hatcher and Glen Howes through suspension.

Newport started brightly, Ashley Wright  putting the ball in the net after 2 minutes, this was ruled out for offside. Ashford were then to take the lead after 12 minutes, following a foul from Jon Holmes, the resulting free kick taken from Ian Ross wasn't dealt with by Taffy Richardson or Simon Arthur and the ball rolled into the net. Newport were to create a chance moments after the restart, following some good play in the centre of the park, Adam Barsdell shot wide from the angle of the penalty area.

Midway through the first half saw the Ashford scorer floored from a hard but fair tackle from Simon Pilcher. The referee blew his whistle straight away and the stretcher called for, there was a delay of around 20 minutes as it was clear that the player was badly hurt in the challenge and that he couldn't be moved. The players were asked to leave the field whilst attention to the unfortunate Ian Ross  was carried out. The player was strechered off to a respectful round of applause.
The game was restarted and took a little while to get going again.  Stuart Cannie, making his debut, showed the Newport supporters why Tatey and Taffy were so keen to sign him. Jon Holmes planted the ball in his path to put Cannie though  1 on 1 with the keeper, scoring on 34minutes to open his Newport account.

The second half starts with the port making all the running, with 52 minutes gone  Cannie goes down in box and ref gives penalty and a chance to put Newport ahead. Gareth Keeping hammers it to the keepers right, the ball hits the post and the chance is gone.Minutes later, Taffy Richardson is shown a straight red for an off the ball incident. Ten men Newport carried on pressing the Ashford defence, Ashley Wright then cooly finishes another 1 on 1 with Whitehouse between the kentmen's sticks, having accepted a terrific lobbed pass from Jon Holmes.

The match then goes into a spell of stalemate, without either team able to make much impression in the final third of the pitch. On 75 minutes  Ashford get a corner, a tackle from Lang see's an Ashford player go down and the visitors are awarded a penalty. They score it, Joby Thorogood making sure of getting the equaliser.
Newport attacked again and just 2 minutes later, saw Joe Wade in the Ashford defence getting his marching orders following a foul, getting his second yellow card of the day.

Newport continued to push for the winner, Adam Barsdell was brought down about 25 yards from goal. Alex Perry stepped up and hit the free-kick goalwards, the Kent glovesman made a good save to turn it over. The match looked to be heading for a draw when deep into stoppage time Chris Bridges does it again. Bridges out on the right wing,  see's the keeper moving off his line in antisipation  for the cross, Bridges whips it over to the far post and despite the keepers scampering back, the ball end up in the back of the net. The small but thoroughly entertained crowd are over the moon.

Taffy Richardson said after the match that the win was dedicated to Chris Cheverton who had suffered a stroke ealier this week.
