John Tate held lands in the reign of Richard ll. at Whitley, Co Warick. He had a son
* John Tate who in about 1418 married Margaret and by her had two sons:
* John (born ca 1422) and
* Thomas (born ca 1420), a merchant of the Staple. He had a two sons, Robert and
* John (born ca 1448 and died 1514) of Coventry, who was sheriff of London 1485
and Lord Mayor of that City 1496. He was knighted by Henry Vlll at the foot of
London Bridge for services done against the rebels at Blackheath. He was buried in
Threadneedle St, London.
He married a welsh lady, Margaret Harpden and had three sons of which
* Sir Bartholomew Tate (born ca 1475 – 1533) was Vice Marshal of Calais and
received the honours of a knight-hood from Henry Vlll. He purchase the monastery of
De la Pre Abbey Co Northampton, shortly after the dissolution. He married in about
1499, Anne, dau of Lawerence Saunders of Herrington, co Northampton and widow
of Mr Wadham. They had two sons of which
* Anthony, Ancestor of the Tates of Burleigh
* Bartholomew Tate (born ca 1525 – 1601), Member of Parliament for Coventry,
1572. He married as his second wife Dorothy (died 1591), dau of Francis Tanfield of
Gayton, co Northampton and had eight children of which
i) Martha Tate (born about 1568 and died about 1624) married Sir John Ouseley (ca
1568 – 1624)
ii) William (born ca 1557) was MP for Corfe Castle, Dorset 1592.
iii) Francis (born ca 1560) was successively MP for Northampton and Shrewsbury.
