The Outer Cape |
Sewing isn't one of my strong points. I managed to luck out and find a long black cape at a second hand store. It once had been someone's Dracula cape. I removed the high collar and shortened it just a tad. I've been intending on adding the shiny satin-look lining. I'd even considered buying a pre-made satiny Dracula cape from Target and sewing it inside my existing cape. I looked high and low, through every nursery and garden shop I could think of, in search of the *Maxi Loc plastic chain that was used as the cape chain on the real movie suit. I must thank that Aussie bloke, Darth Sye, for sending me two pieces of that chain! His site has great illustrated directions for making your own outer cape, complete with leather collar and leather bottom hem, plus the shiny lining. Stop by Vader Maker Australia for details. I plan to use his directions when I get up the nerve to make my own cape. "Gypsyboy", over at the Sith Training Temple has extensive sewing experience and can give some extra pointers or answer questions. UPDATE ON FINDING CAPE CHAIN!!!!!!! Down Under, it went by the brand name Maxi Loc. I never was able to find it here in the states, and since Darth Sye had sent me some, I really didn't need to bother looking anymore. Occasionally, I'd do a search to see if I could help out the less fortunate... but I'd always come up empty. Thanks to the dillegent work of Sith Apprentice Darth Rynos...the elusive cape chain has been found!! It now goes by the name Poly Chain Lock (#3015 medium weight) and can be found on Amazon.com for $25.99 for a 250 ft roll. (Be sure to get the medium weight and not the heavy weight, which has larger, squarer links!) On behalf of all of the cape chain seekers out there...Thank You Darth Rynos!!!!!!! |

Poly Chain Lock.... It's true purpose in life is to help secure sapling trees to a support. In the Star Wars world, it secures Vader's cape around his neck, so that his hands are free to secure them around a Rebel's neck! |
Vader's wide and flowing outer cape is made from wool, while the lining is a satin material. There is a short collar made out of leather. The bottom edge of the cape is hemmed with a ~two inch strip of leather to keep it from fraying whilst dragging on the floor behind him. (Check out the scene in "Empire" when Vader is pacing around on the Executor talking to the bounty hunters. You'll see some trim at the bottom that looks like satin almost...but I think in out discussion forums, it was determined to be leather.) His cape chain is made out of a piece of "Poly Chain Lock" plastic chain...as seen below. FYI: Epi 3 cape chain is black metal link chain, not Poly Lock. The cape is secured to the chest armor near where the chain comes out of the collar. The chain hangs freely. No cape hook. |
Whatever you end up using for your cape or making it out of, be sure that it is a matte finish material on the outside....shiny material on the inside. Hem the two pieces together only at the sides and top of the cape. If you connect the two pieces of material at the bottom, you'll get what's called the "paper bag effect".....and you certainly wouldn't wan't that! Faux leather (vinyl) can be substituted for the leather parts. |
