This section is for the prospective student and attempts to address the most common questions asked about the art of Tae Kwon Do. If a question was overlooked, please ask us! Do I need to have prior experience to join? No. What are typical classes like? The first thirty minutes of class consists of warm-up, which is varied by instructor. It may be a series of stretches, jogging, partner exercises, or meditation, depending on the choices of the instructor. During some practices, basic techniques will be reviewed by everyone because we all need it. The rest of class is focused on various aspects of martial arts, such as forms, one-steps, drills, or sparring. The emphasis we make in our school is keeping the martial artist well-rounded in all these aspects and not only one of them. We practice traditional Korean Martial Arts, including a strong emphasis on Tae Kwon Do balanced with some Hap Ki Do and Judo. Is Tae Kwon Do dangerous? No, Tae Kwon Do is the eradication of violence. So you mean even kids do it? To answer this question, simply come to one of our classes! Kids are full of potential, especially as a result of their enthusiasm and flexibility. Adults learn an incredible amount from them. Furthermore, we greatly wish to work with the parents of younger students in order to couple the developmental progress in Tae Kwon Do with that in school and at home. Therefore, discussions between parents and instructors are especially welcome and encouraged! In addition, parents' attendance at promotion tests can be of particular value in verifying this progress. At which age is best to begin Tae Kwon Do? There truly isn't a best age. We encourage kids even as early as age seven and those who are older adults to join. I am not as young and fit as I used to be, can Tae Kwon Do still be good for me? Definitely. You will see that Korean martial arts will help you in many ways that are not limited to the physical aspects. That is one reason that differentiates Tae Kwon Do from a sport. What's my first class gonna be like? After deciding to join, just come in! You can come into comfortable sweat pants and T-shirt. Later, we will order you a uniform for approximately $13. Then one of the upper ranks will assist you in our warm-ups. Although counting is done in Korean, we will encourage you to count in English if you don't know Korean yet. It's the spirit we want to emphasis in our students. And most importantly, expect to sweat! |
