Questions What are demos? Demonstrations are often given by members of our school to teach others rudimentary self-defense techniques and to spread knowledge of the club to those who may be interested in joining. For example, the Miami University Oxford Red Dragons give demonstrations to residence halls on campus throughout the year in the hopes of teaching young women defense techniques against an attacker, or of gathering new members who've never had a chance ot join a martial art before bur are interested. The Red Dragons have also given demonstrations to ROTC units on campus. What do you do in a demo? Demonstrations often have several parts. They may have a breaking demonstration in order to show the power of the art. They may have a forms demonstration to show the grace and traditional aspects of the art, and, especially in the case of the Miami demonstrations, there can be a self-defense demonstration, showing practical, and easy techniques to use against an aggressor. |

Do you have to be in a demonstration to be a student in the school? In the old days, it was a requirement to be in demonstrations and tournaments in addition to belt tests. This was the training of the well-rounded martial artist. Today, demonstrations are strongly encouraged but not mandatory. However, just like being a student in college, you must fulfill your general education requirements in addition to those in your major area of study in order to be a good student and, overall, a better person in society. Likewise, to become a better martial artist, you wouldn't do just the minimum. You'd want to do all that would make your training very enriching to make you become a good warrior. And demonstrations will help you get there. |
