Dear Mr. Thornhill:
Acting Director Ed Snyder has asked me to respond to your correspondence of June 21, 1999.
I regret any possible error that may have been made on your California Driver License. If your name has been misspelled, a correction is possible at any of the department's local offices. If, however, your concern is with the all capital letters, no correction is possible. The characters are computer generated and formatted for capital letters only.
The department utilizes the standard postal format for addresses which includes a ZIP code to facilitate handling and delivery by the United States Postal Service. Also, the department uses the most cost effective means to process the millions of items mailed annually. The department will continue to address mail using the standard postal format for any mail that is asddressed to you.
The California driver license is issued and directed by statute, clear in its requirements. A qualifier such as "privilege accepted without prejudice" is not acceptable as part of your signature on a driver license. Since this modifies your acceptance, and is unclear in its use or intention.
If you have any questions, contact the department's Customer Communications Section at (916) 657-6560.
Sincerely,
/s/ B.B. JONES
