Nijuroku

Nijuroku is an exercise (not an official Uechi kata) created by Sensei George E. Mattson, the person recognized for introducing Uechi-Ryu to America. Because Nijuroku is not an official part of the system, many schools do not teach it. This is unfortunate because it is a very useful tool in learning many of the basics of Uechi-Ryu. Nijuroku utilizes many of the stances in the style, which force students to practice their strength, stability, and balance. Moreover, the exercise emphasizes basic punches, kicks, and blocks, while moving from stance to stance. Although Nijuroku is not a standardized rank requirement in the Uechi-Ryu system, if taught, it is usually learned at an early level, around the same time as Kanshiwa. As well as the obvious benefits to practicing Nijuroku, along with Kanshiwa and the aiding exercises, it helps prepare students for Kanchu.
