Earthquakes in Amber
Scott Sherman - 9.4.2002

The ground rolls in slow waves
As if the world is trapped in amber.
Shockwaves emanate in gold from within the epicenter;
Where we lie together.

The Earth moves constantly,
And time marches on,
But I would stop time
To be with you forever.

I could stop time,
Hike eight-hundred miles with you on my mind,
Then start time again
And fall asleep in your arms.

I lie in bed
After the phone conversation ends.
I dream about earthquakes in amber
And watching them from your bed.

Information About This Piece:
Throughout a large portion of the year 2002, I held a very deep friendship with someone far away. We called each other nightly and often spent hours on the phone. One night, when we were both falling asleep on the phone, she said something about earthquakes. At the time, I was listening to the song Amber, by 311. I guess that's what inspired the ensuing dream consisting of the images described by the poem above.
This poem, among several other poems by either one of us, was a great comfort to me whenever I was saddened by the distance between us. Now, it comforts me in a different way: bringing to mind memories of the time I spent with her and the way she made me feel without even trying.
