THE POWER

A GM small block 305 cubic inch motor powers this TA.  This motor used the Tuned Port Injection (TPI) system, which is a “batch” fire system, which means that each bank of injectors will all fire at the same time.  This system was a 30% increase in fuel economy and power over the carbureted motors.  The 1988 305 TPI automatic motor was rated at 195 HP @ 4,000 RPM and 295 ft/Ibs of torque @ 2,800 RPM.  The manual transmission had an advantage over the automatic because the manual had a better rear end gear ratio, bigger cam, and 25 more HP over the automatic.
This 305 motor is known as a LB9 motor.  LB9 was a code assigned to this motor by GM to signify that it’s a 90 degree 305 cu/in TPI motor.  It is an ‘F’ motor because the 8th digit of the VIN is F, which signifies the LB9.  This LB9 motor had the small cam with an intake lift of .350” and a duration of 179; and an exhaust lift of .384” and a duration of 194.  The diameter of the intake valves is 1.84” and the exhaust valve diameter is 1.50”.  The combustion chamber is 58 cc and has a compression ratio of 9.3:1.  The bore is 3.74” and the stroke is 3.48”.
