THE POWER A GM small block 305 cubic inch motor powers this TA. This motor used the Tuned Port Injection (TPI) system, which is a batch fire system, which means that each bank of injectors will all fire at the same time. This system was a 30% increase in fuel economy and power over the carbureted motors. The 1988 305 TPI automatic motor was rated at 195 HP @ 4,000 RPM and 295 ft/Ibs of torque @ 2,800 RPM. The manual transmission had an advantage over the automatic because the manual had a better rear end gear ratio, bigger cam, and 25 more HP over the automatic. This 305 motor is known as a LB9 motor. LB9 was a code assigned to this motor by GM to signify that its a 90 degree 305 cu/in TPI motor. It is an F motor because the 8th digit of the VIN is F, which signifies the LB9. This LB9 motor had the small cam with an intake lift of .350 and a duration of 179; and an exhaust lift of .384 and a duration of 194. The diameter of the intake valves is 1.84 and the exhaust valve diameter is 1.50. The combustion chamber is 58 cc and has a compression ratio of 9.3:1. The bore is 3.74 and the stroke is 3.48.
