Posted - Feb 03 2003 : 12:02:05 PM -------------------------------------------------------------- Alderman Joe Moore (49) scored a major victory last week in his bid for re-election when he won the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge 7. One of the largest single FOP lodges in the nation, Chicago Lodge 7 endorsed Moore over his four opponents in the 49th Ward aldermanic race. “I am honored and gratified to have received the endorsement of the leading organization that represents the interests of Chicago police officers,” Moore said. “This endorsement is reflective of the excellent relationship I have developed with our police officers in our fight for safer streets and neighborhoods,” Moore added. “It’s all well and good to talk tough on crime, but the officers on the street know that tough talk only goes so far,” Moore continued. “Those officers need an elected official who can work hand-in-hand with them, and who understands that there are no quick-fix solutions to our crime problem.” Moore, a pioneer in the fight to bring community policing to Chicago, cited the 42 percent reduction in crime that has occurred in Rogers Park in the last 12 years as evidence that community policing and his close working relationship with the 24th District Police Department is paying big dividends. “The neighborhood is safer than it was twelve years ago, but we can’t rest on our laurels,’ said Moore. “One crime is one crime too many. Far too many 49th Ward residents are still fearful to walk the streets at night and far too many are still victims of crime. We must redouble our efforts to achieve our dream of a crime-free 49th Ward,” he added. An unofficial poll of street cops answering calls in the 24th District would indicate something entirely different. I would know. I've asked them. Joe Moore = tall, goofy joke-in-a-suit. Good luck tonight, Joe, when you go up against three candidates (I dunno much about Tom Bradley's involvement) with better anti-crime reputations than you could ever hope to have. The reparte should be very interesting. Theirs, that is. Groser_Karp@Yahoo.COM - not the minnow GroserKarp@Yahoo.COM Jr. "I have to eat the poop you scoop. Don't fry me for telling you what it tastes like!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Careful readers will note that the following questions have remained unanswered by Joe Moore, ever since they were first posted on Forum49: AS AN INDICATION OF YOUR PROACTIVE APPROACH TO CRIME, AS A CITIZEN IN THE 49TH WARD, Please answer the following questions as completely as you can: * What beat do you live in, and who is your beat facilitator? * How many times have you attended beat meetings in the past year, not as a potential candidate, but BECAUSE YOU DECIDED, IN ADVANCE, THAT YOU HAD SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE AGENDA, OR THAT YOU HAD SOMETHING TO REPORT AS A WITNESS, OR BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO BE ACTIVE AS AN INVOLVED CAPS VOLUNTEER. * How many times have you dialed 911 in the past year, and how many times did you continue to do so until the police arrived to take action? * How many times have you filed a complaint against a criminal or filed a report regarding violations of the law on your street or in your neighborhood? * How many times have you shown up in court as a plaintiff or as a witness to a crime committed in Rogers Park? * What is your honest opinion of the DAC, and how effective or productive do you believe it to be? * What was your personal level of participation in the CAPS Community Forum - Sunday, November 17, 2002 - here at Loyola? * In your opinion, over the past 5 years, how has the lack of an adequate community center at Gale Park affected crime levels and other aspects of community life north of Rogers? * How do you feel about the struggles of YouthNet in Rogers Park, and what are you doing PERSONALLY to help it grow and function as a positive force in the 49th Ward. * What will you do to increase the level of comprehensive followup on DGHES and other "bad-landlord" cases? NOW, AS A POTENTIALLY NEWLY-ELECTED ALDERMAN (incumbent or not): ?? Why don't we hear more successful anti-crime stories from our neighbors (here in the 49th Ward), and what do you think is an acceptable level of coordination with neighboring ward/township politicos and community leaders? Please do not take this as an opportunity to start reciting stories we've already heard. Crime or, as Joe Moore is fond of phrasing it - the "perception" of crime - seems to be putting a damper on all sorts of community improvements, including the long (LONG) empty retail spaces at the (still) expanding Gateway project. We've heard time and again how hard Joe has "worked" to bring business to Rogers Park, only to hear (directly and through the grapevine) that customers don't (or won't) feel safe enough to shop in our commercial venues. CAPS participation levels (on the whole) seem too low and intermittent to combat street crime effectively in our ward (but there have been some excellent exceptions, however), and the police (often, apparently, with "un-enforceable" anti-loitering laws on the books) seem only to be able to chase/move/"relocate" offenders (etc...) from one hangout to another (with, again, some excellent exceptions). ?? How will you (as alderman) work to get more service/coverage from the "City", CTA and the Chicago Police Department (bottom line: to get more cops on our beats/transportation lines, and more money/man-hours dedicated to 49th Ward CAPS initiatives, until our street crime is sufficiently suppressed)? ?? What long-term strategies (with police and the community (CAPS) intimately involved, of course) will you personally and actively support, using the power of your office, to ensure that street criminals are pursued, apprehended, charged and convicted, not simply moved from one corner (block or neighborhood) to another? - E-mail us: Chicago's 49th Ward MudZappers > Ward49_MudZapper@Yahoo.COM |

What Joe REALLY meant is that HE can't rest on OUR laurels. About the only thing Joe got right when he wrote his press release was this: "One crime is one crime too many. Far too many 49th Ward residents are still fearful to walk the streets at night and far too many are still victims of crime. We must redouble our efforts to achieve our dream of a crime-free 49th Ward" Thanks for reading. |
