A Tribute in Honor of: Alderman Joe Moore - The Chicago Tribune Speaks! |

"There was a time when Ald. Joe Moore kept up the tradition of vocal
political independence in this ward, but many activists believe he's lost
the fire. Moore got lots of attention for passing a resolution against war
in Iraq. Meanwhile, the commercial districts in his ward have sagged and
crime is a serious concern. Michael Harrington has a long history of
involvement in independent politics and knows everything about the needs of the 49th Ward. It's time to bring some new energy to this post, and
Harrington would do that. He wins the endorsement."-
From Chicago Tribune Editorial Board Endorsement - Feb. 14, 2003 Dear Friends, An exciting development has occurred in the race for 49th ward Alderman. As you read above, the Chicago Tribune has endorsed Michael Harrington. As the residents of the ward who have participated in the debate forums have learned, there is one candidate for alderman who is committed to this community, not to personal political gain at the expense of Rogers Park. Michael, a community development consultant, has committed to convening a community forum to undertake the planning necessary to move our neighborhood forward. Michael is also committed to building the necessary relationships with the mayor, fellow aldermen, foundations and other elected and appointed government officials to rally the resources necessary to address the challenges facing Rogers Park. In their endorsement of Michael, the tribune all but said that the incumbent has lost his way. Despite the assertions of mayoral support in his slick campaign literature, I have yet to see a Daley/Moore yard sign in the 49th ward. As you drive around the city, take note of the scores of yard signs for Daley and various incumbent aldermen. The 49th ward needs an alderman like 40th ward alderman Pat O'Connor, who knows how to get things done and has the support of the Mayor. Please take a few minutes to read the following message from Michael and consider supporting his campaign. Also, if you are a resident of the 49th ward, please share the Tribune's aldermanic endorsement of Michael with your neighbors. If you would like to learn more about Michael's campaign, visit I.J. The following message is from Michael Harrington, Candidate for Alderman in the 49th Ward: February 16, 2003 Dear Neighbor, I am honored to have the support of the Chicago Tribune in my campaign for 49th Ward Alderman. My interview with the Tribune a few weeks ago was an exhaustive session addressing my background, qualifications, issue positions, and my plans for the future. As one excited voter who called me at home early on the morning of Valentine's Day, "This is awesome. Everyone knows you can't sweet talk the Tribune. You really earned this!" That's exactly the point. Our campaign is about the issues, and my pledge to work hard for the future of our community, our residents, and our families. Along with the Chicago Tribune, we've earned the endorsements of activists from the Democratic Party, Republican Party, Libertarian Party, and Green Party. They are working shoulder-to-shoulder to help me win, including Rogers Park Green Party leader Jason Farbman and 49th Ward Republican Committeeman Robert Shearer. As a longtime independent! progressive Democrat running i n a non-partisan election, I welcome this encouragement from residents from across the political spectrum. This broad base of community support will help us win on Feb 25. We're in the countdown phase of the campaign now. Every hour of every day counts as our volunteers take Harrington campaign literature to voters in the precincts and spread the word. Every campaign check written to "Citizens For Harrington" represents another step forward. I hope you plan to attend the Harrington Pre-Election Fundraiser and Rally on Thurs., Feb. 20 from 6-9pm at Charmers Bar, at 1502 W. Jarvis (just east of the Jarvis el station). A suggested minimum contribution of $100 would help greatly; food and drinks are complimentary and all contributions will be gladly accepted. If you can't come to our pre-election celebration I hope you will support me by sending a check to Citizens For Harrington, 1409 W. Morse Ave., Chicago, IL 60626.
