Doppleganger: Grouping: magical humanoid or spirit. A monster or spirit which appears to look and act just like its victim in many ways, but is subtlely different and has a motive to scare, kill, demoralize, or just confuse. It is just as strong and has the same skills as its victim, but it never gets tired. Usually sent by a wizard, a demon, or a god. The word can also be used to describe a person who looks almost exactly the same as someone else but is not a biological twin. Genre-shapechanger. Source: Here and there, I don't remember specifically. In nethack it is another type of shapechanger which takes the form of character classes the player can be. There is also one in Zork III (the text adventure), although Zork doesn't use the word "doppleganger". The nethack description of "Aleax" is like a dopperganger, I don't know if "Aleax" is another name for it or if it is something else that is similar. I'd like a more origonal source for this.
Dragon:
Grouping: magical beast. Shape: winged lizard. Different ideas of
a dragon very in size anywhere between 12 and 50 feet from head
to tail, sometimes even longer. They are famous for living in
large caves in mountains, guarding large treasures, and
destroying towns and countrysides with its firey breath.
A knight is often not considered a hero or worthy adventurer
until he has killed a dragon, rescued a woman in danger (sometimes
by killing a dragon), or completed another type of significantly great
quest or battle.
That, at least, is probably the most popular view of a dragon in our culture. There are many different views of dragons. Some dragons are intelligent and can cast spells and have telepathic powers or magic in their voices, others use very little or no magic and act more like wild beasts. Some are inherently evil, and some, especially in eastern culture, are benevolent and good. Often in computer games, different colors indicate different types of elemental dragons. Genre-reptile. Source: various ideas..
Dream Fairy (see Dynthe)
Droan: Grouping: magical humanoid. A Droan's skin is very tough and usually coal-black in color. Made by magic from a sea vestrage, it has webbed hands and feet and is very muscular. It is the servant of whoever made it. In Garefen: They live in the sea around the island of Rixsah. They were made by an ancient samon. When that samon was defeated they hibernated until there was another samon on Rixsah to serve. Genre-lethkel/magic invention. Source: mine, appears in "The Redemption of Wesley Kracken."see also samon.
Drunken Fairy (see Yik)
Dryad (see Nymph)
Dullahan: Grouping: fairy?/demon. The probable origin of the headless horseman, the Dullahan is an irish fairy which appears as a cloaked corpse riding a horse who carries its severed head raised in its right hand. Like the banshee, it is a herald of death. Wherever the dullahan stops, a person dies. Its glowing head is the color and texture of stale dough or moldy cheese and it wears a hideous grin and darting eyes. When it gets annoyed at people watching it, it might throw a basin of blood or strike the person blind in one eye. He uses a human spine as a whip, and is sometimes seen not with one horse but riding a coach driven by six black horses. Its coach can travel so fast that sometimes the brush along the side of the road will catch fire, and every town's gate will open for it no matter how securely they are locked. Its head is only allowed to speak once on each journey it makes, and then it calls the name of the person who is about to die. It is said to be the embodyment of the ancient Irish god Crom Dubh or "Black Crom." This god demanded human sacrifice usually by beheading. Genre-sedhe. Dwarf: [1] Grouping: nonmagic humanoid. av.height 4'4"-5'2". In appearance, they are small but stocky and strong and almost always have beards (even the women). Dwarves live in large cave cities in mountains and are great miners and metalworkers. Their lifespan is about 250 years. They are proud and highly value honor in war and all their doings, but their greed has been the cause of much strife. Genre-earth. Source: my slant on popular idea and Tolkien.
Dwarf: [2] Grouping: fairy. These dwarves are somewhat alike in appearance with mortal dwarves, but are uglier or rather more funny-looking and often have deformities in their feet. Their personality is mysterious and mischivious more similar to other fairies than the non-fairy dwarves. They will not come above ground without disguising as an animal such as a frog or turning themselves invisible. One large similarity between the two types of dwaves is that both are master miners and blacksmiths. Genre-earth fairy. Source: nethack description, other popular idea, fairy stories.
Dynthe: Grouping: fairy. Shape: humanoid, av.height 3'2"-4'. Like several types of fairies, these appear like children except Dynthe like to walk on air so they don't have to look up to taller people. Also known as "Dream Fairies," Dynthe have powerful magic in the area of illusions, sleep, and of course dreams. Genre-gnome-related fairy. Source: mine, doesn't appear in any of my stories yet.

Effretti: Grouping: magical humanoid. av.height 8'-12'. A giant who seems to be made of fire. Sometimes called an "ifrit", the term "ifrit" can also refer to smaller versions of it. Genre-ifrit. Source: The Pit, has appeared in other games I have played, would appreciate a more origonal source.
Eirrinel: Grouping: fairy. Shape: batlike, same size or slightly larger than a bat. This species of Xafeni fairy lives in the Silver Land to help rescue people from the grepse. Like other Xafeni, they have magic which is especially useful for working against the grepse, including the ability to let those lost in the Silver Land communicate with those outside. Their only weakness is that those they are trying to help don't usually recognise them as something helpful. Genre-xafeni. Source: mine, appears in "A Step Up."
Elf: [1] Grouping: fairy. Shape:humanoid. Approx. human-sized or slightly smaller. The type of fairies which are most like humans, "Common Elves" live in wooded cities and towns often not very different from human towns, although they use little or no electricity and usually conduct business less greedily. Theenin are called the "true elves" because it is said that common elves and wood elves are decended from theenin who intermarried with humans or huelmills. Common elves and wood elves are also the types of fairies with the least powerful magic. They are the only types of fairies would ever be tempted by or use black magic, though Theenin, Gnomes, and a couple others might use wizardry (which, in my books at least, is different). Genre-Elf. Source: my slant on popular idea, appears in my novels. (see also Huelmill and Theenin)
Elf: [2] Grouping: magical humanoid. Describing Quote: "The eldest and noblest of the speaking races of Middle Earth.. about six feet tall and somewhat slender; they were graceful but strong, and resistant to the extremes of nature. Their senses of hearing and sight were much keener than those of Men. Elves did not die naturally but could be killed.. Elves did not sleep but rested their minds by thinking of past ages or looking back at beautiful things. They [or at least some of them] could talk directly from mind to mind without words.. Elves and dwarves were not very friendly [with each other]." from A Guide to Middle Earth by Robert Foster. Source: Tolkien. BTW, that "Guide To Middle Earth" is a good reference for all things Tolkien, the author obviously did his research.
Elf: [3] Grouping: fairy. The term "elf" is also often used to refer to other types of fairies. Or on their own as a type of fairy smaller than humans, sometimes just a little smaller or sometimes only inches tall. The German "Erlking" translated means "Elf-king" and it is an evil being, darker than any other view of elves I've heard of. Source: other popular idea and fairy tales.
Erinyes: Grouping: spirit/daemon. The Erinyes is an evil, female monster, the source of the Furies. (The plural Furies are the Roman version of the singular Greek Erinyes) She wields a brass-studded whip and brays and barks like a dog. She dresses in shadowy black and has serpent gorgon-like hair. Poisonous blood drips from her eyes. She loves to torture but will rarely deal the killing blow, instead leaving it to another monster or to the victim to kill himself. Erinyes is also refered to sarcastically or in fear as "The Kindly One." Genre-major demon/demigod. Source: Greek Mythology, sites: www.cybercomm.net/~grampa/chapter1.html and http://www.messagenet.com/myths/immortals.html.
Erlking: Grouping: fairy/demon. The word means "Elf-king," but they are far different from any other elves I've heard about. From german folklore, this evil fairy will appear harmless and lure people, often children, to their deaths in the forest. In the short opera with the name "Erlking," a man rides through the forest with his son riding behind him on the horse. The erlking calls to the man's son, and the father can't hear or see the erlking. ("Oh, come thou dear infant! Oh, come thou with me!/ Full many a game I will play there with thee") The boy keeps telling his father that there is something strange calling to him, but the father doesn't believe him. And when the father rides out of the forest, his son is dead. Genre-sedhe. Source: German folklore and mainly from the "Erlking" opera with lyrics by Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
Ettin: Grouping: non-magic humanoid. Ettins are two-headed, barbaric giants. Genre-giant. Source: Nethack, also in some other games, don't know where they're from origonally.
Extril: Grouping: fairy. Shape: humanoid, av.height 3'3"-4'3". Closely related to the Dynthe, the Extril is also known as the "Insane Fairy." Besides driving people insane in many ways, they also have magic with illusions. They love to play cruel tricks and laugh at people for stupid reasons. They can walk on air but don't as often as the Dynthe. Genre-gnome-related fairy. Source: mine, doesn't appear in any of my stories yet.

Fairy Grouping: Almost all fairies by personality are mysterious and mischivious. They usually stay away from humans except to play tricks. Most fairies of Garefen (the world I made up) are good and would never hurt someone intentionally, but they sometimes do harmful things which they don't think are harmful. Fairies from traditional folklore are often evil though they do not always appear unfriendly, even if they are evil. Most fairies which appear in Garefen have a nickname given to them by Common Elves, humans, or huelmills, for example Gnomes are known as "Wisdom Fairies." The Genres of fairies include: Sprite-related, Pixie-related, Elf-related, Zimp-related, Nymph, Gnome-related, Gnoll, Goblin-related, Leprechaun related, Xafeni, and Sedhe. Two unique genres are the Xafeni and the Sedhe. "Sedhe" (pronounced "shee") is the Irish word for fairy, and I use the genre name to identify mostly irish fairies but a couple others from folklore that are more different from the fairies which I made up. Xafeni fairies are all ones I made up except for the unicorn. In Garefen, they had set themselves apart to protect people from the silver beings. (see also Xafeni fairy genre, Sedhe fairy genre, and the Silver Beings grouping) (see also Huelmill)
Farm Fairy (see Trasti)
Fawn (see Satyr)
Floating Eye: Grouping: non-flesh based. Shape-sphere. It is what the name implies, paralyzing with its gaze. Possibly the attempt of a novice wizard to imitate the Beholder. Genre-eye. Source: Nethack and other computer games, not sure why I included it here, but now that it's here why take it out?
Fool (see Sedhe)
Furie: Grouping: spirit/daemon. Smaller and faster offspring of the Erinyes, they also drip blood and bark eriely. The english word "fury" likely came from these demons which are known for the frenzy with which they chase their enemies, who, when caught, are poisoned are ripped to shreds by the furies' bloody claws. Base-spirit/magic flesh. Source: from Roman mythology, but this description is mainly my version of something smaller related to the erinyes, if anyone knows of another source with info about the Roman furies, please tell me.
