CONSULTATION QUESTIONS
OK, so you've gotten your referral from your Preferred Provider and you actually have a consultation date with a surgeon. 
GOOD JOB!
Now what do you do?  It's good to have a list of questions ready for the doctor when you first meet.  Here's a partial list of what you may want to ask....
PRE SURGERY QUESTIONS
Do I need to alter my diet in the days or weeks before surgery?
What testing is required prior to surgery? (ultrasound, EKG, breathing tests, X Rays, etc.)
Will my sleep apnea affect the surgery?
Will I need to arrange for special transportation going home from the hospital?
How can I prepare for the surgery? (frequent showers with antibacterial soap, etc.)
What will I do with the medications that I take now? Will I need to get a liquid version of them?
Will I need anything special to help my sleeping position after surgery? (wedges, a recliner, etc.)
SURGICAL PROCEDURE QUESTIONS
What surgeries do yo perform?  Which one do you recommend for me? Why?
Do you perform the procedure open or laproscopically?
Do you transect the stomach, do a partial removal of the stomach, or staple it?  What percentage of your patients have had Staple Line Disruption (SLD)?
How much of a bypass do you do? Proximal or distal?
How will the length of the bypass affect what supplements I will need to take after surgery?
Will I need to by in Intensive Care (ICU)?  If so, for how long?
Where will my IV be located (arm, neck, wrist) and how long will it be in?
Will I be on a morphine pump? If so, for how long?
Do you use an epidural during surgery?
Will I have to have a catheter?  If so, how long will it be in?
Will I need a nasal tube? When will it come out?
Will there be drain tubes in my stomach and/or in my incision?  How long will they need to stay in?
Does the Anesthesiologist need to make special preparations because of my size?  Is he/she used to working with larger patients?
Will I be able to take in liquids in the hospital? How soon after surgery will I be able to sip water?
Will you perform the surgery, or will a resident?  Who will assist in the surgery?
