Wiccan Deities

This information comes from many different sources and is adapted to my beliefs. I take a little from here, a little from there - whatever grabs my soul and feels right to me. It comes directly from my own Book of Shadows. Great Spirit is the God I relate to and Mother Earth is my Goddess. There are many different "pantheons" of gods and goddesses that you can choose from. These just happen to be mine. (I hope it all makes sense actually being put on paper, if not always feel free to email me and say "Hey ThunderWolf! You're not making any sense here!" I'll always answer you.)

The Wicca acknowledge a supreme divine power (The Great Mystery), unknowable, ultimate, from which the entire universe sprang. This supreme power is personified into two basic beings: The Great Spirit (The God) and the Mother Earth (the Goddess). Every aspect of human existence can be linked with Great Spirit and Mother Earth. They can be called upon to help us sort through the complex changes of our existences, and bring joy into our often spiritually-bereft lives.

This doesn't mean that when problems occur we should leave them in the hands of Great Spirit or Mother Earth. That's a stalling maneuver. However, as Wiccans we can call on Great Spirit and Mother Earth to clear our minds and to help us help ourselves.

The Deities are the creative forces of the universe (not just symbols), we can call upon them to empower our rites and to bless our magick. After attuning with the Deities Wiccans ask their assistance during the magickal rite that usually follows. We have direct links with Great Spirit and Mother Earth. No intermediaries are needed: no priests or confessors or shamans. We are the shamans.

Great Spirit and Mother Earth are real, viable entities, possessing the force that created the universe. Attuning with them changes us forever. It also sparks new hope for our planet and for our continued existence upon it.

Discovering the Deities of Wicca is a never-ending experience. They constantly reveal themselves - in different ways, in different situations, etc.

In truly understanding Great Spirit and Mother Earth, you come to understand life, for the two are inextricably entwined. Live your earthly life fully, but see the spiritual aspects of your activities also. Remember -- the physical and spiritual are reflections of each other.

Great Spirit and Mother Earth are of nature, both the delightful and the dark. We don't worship nature as such; some probably wouldn't even say they worship the Deities. We don't bow down to the Deities, we work with them to create a better world. In working with, though, we must show our respect and our thanks.

The symbolism of the Goddess is not a parallel structure to the symbolism of God the Father. The Goddess does not rule the world, she is the world. Manifest in each and every one of us, She can be known internally by every individual, in all Her magnificent diversity. In WitchCraft, each of us must reveal our own truth. Deity is seen in our own forms, whether female or male, because the Goddess has her male aspect. Religion is a matter of re-linking with the divine within and with Her outer manifestations in all of the human and natural world.

My interpretation of the Goddess in my life.

Mother Earth is the source of all fertility, endless wisdom and loving caresses. She gives birth to abundance. But as life is Her gift, She lends it with the promise of death. She is the giver of fertility, love and abundance.

Mother Earth will nurture you, after all, you are Her child. She will share your joys, journey with you, heal your hurts, guide you in the right direction, etc. She is the ultimate Mother. You are not alone -- ever. You're a child of the Earth.

All acts of pleasure, joy, and abundance are given by Mother Earth.

Mother Earth is our ally. It doesn't matter what situation you've created: Ask Her for assistance and abundance will follow. She is the source of all solutions and answers to the questions that fill our realities. She helps your goals become concrete realities, for She is the Mother of prophecy, magick and power.

She brings mothering medicine, She is the Mother of all healing. She is the Goddess of childbirth, mothers and mothering; the source of beauty, love and compassion.

Every inch of Mother Earth holds a specially energized connection to some living creature, and is therefore to be honored. She is the Mother of all plants and animals, of freshness, renewal, beginnings, promise and potential in and of all seasons of Her life.

I refer to her aspect as Grandmother Moon for the lunar aspect of the Goddess. (I will explain this some time later.)

Great Spirit
My interpretation of the God in my life.

He is the Creator, the source of all. He is also the Grandfather Sun. Light is the power of Great Spirit and fire represents his eternal lvoe for us. He dwells in the heavens and the ever-present breezes are His breath. He also resides within all, and within us. He is our eternal partner, just like the Mother.

We can, must, trust in His protection and His divine plan. We must trust that Great Spirit cares for us, that there is a plan and purpose to everything, always shaded by our free will.

Great Spirit's life force flows through us, we receive wholeness when we receive Great Spirit. All power, that comes to us from Him, comes as a gift, as well as true visions. Wisdom comes in many strange and curious forms and is always related to the creative force of Great Spirit.

He is the bringer of warmth, hope and life for the people and the earth along-side Mother Earth. He is the warmth that bursts the dormant seeds into life and hastens the greening of Mother Earth after the cold snows of winter. Therefore, He is a god of healing also.

Great Spirit provides us with guidance and direction, gives us inspiration and illumination. He loves us all equally and unconditionally, and has compassion for all.

Prayer and connection with Great Spirit brings the greatest wisdom. A slow heartbeat drumming will connect you with Him.
