Episode 8 - Comic Reunion!: July 22, 2003 |
It was the final day in the house for the six remaining comics. Dat was thrilled that he had triumphed over veteran Dave Mordal. Rich said that losing his friend Dave was like going through a breakup or having a friend you grew up with move away. While Dat practiced his comedy kung fu by the pool, the five other comics got comfortable for their final day in the house. Cory (no "e") also made her way to a taping of Last Call with Carson Daly. Jay Mohr was also in the studio, hoping to lessen Cory's nerves. Knowing that she'd be performing before a younger audience, Cory tailored her set to the young adult crowd. The full performance aired the same night as this episode of Last Comic. Back at the house, the fortune teller spit out a card saying "Jackson Slaughterhouse Comics." Geoff and Tess were baffled. It was "the Don", Rich Vos, who figured out that the card referred to the number 5. Jackson Five. Slaughterhouse Five. You see? So, one of the six comics was going home before the Las Vegas finals. They all hoped it meant they would compete against each other. Jay arrived to explain what it really meant. There would be one final in-house vote - with no immunity for any of the comics. Also, the comic voted out would not get to choose their competitor. The loser of the final head-to-head competition was out. Geoff sensed that the others were taken aback by the news, especially Rich and Cory. Everyone prepared differently. Dat ate, rehearsed, trained and rehearsed some more. Tess just freshened up her lip gloss. That night, the voting went down as follows: Dat picked Cory; Geoff picked Rich; Tess chose Dat (again); Ralphie voted for Geoff; Rich picked Geoff; and Cory chose Geoff. Apparently, the sad remainders of the coalition all picked Geoff without even consulting first! Geoff would definitely be performing, but had no idea who he'd be competing against. In a surprise move, Rob, Dave, Sean and Tere entered the theatre! They would be choosing Geoff's opponent. First, each exiled comic got to address the group. Dave spoke first and slammed Dat a little. Rob told everyone they were great and that he was proud to have been on the show. Next, Tere told everyone she thought they were really talented. Sean, wearing his trademark cowboy hat, said, "Thanks for the vacation" and thanked Dat for taking out Dave. The four comics deliberated in a separate room. Would they pick a comic for personal reasons or on pure comic ability? After a short meeting, they unanimously chose Dat Phan to oppose Geoff in that night's competition. That night, before a live audience, Geoff took the stage first. It was his first stand-up performance since moving into the house. He talked about being "too damned straight." "I'm so straight," he said "I bite my hotdogs from the middle." Everyone was laughing... except Dat. He seemed verrrrry nervous as he watched Geoff's seemingly effortless set. Next, Dat opened without his trademark accent. He discussed growing up in a racist part of San Diego. He said one time a guy called him a "rice ball" so he didn't know what to do. He called him a "hotdog" in retaliation. Must've been a hotdog theme for the evening. As with the previous competition, the crowd responded warmly to Dat's jokes. It was tough to say who the crowd would vote to keep. The other comics also thought it was a toss up. Ultimately, Jay announced that once again, Dat had pulled out a win (with 77% of the vote). Geoff took it like a man. He grabbed his bags and headed out to the awaiting cab. Geoff didn't blame anybody but himself. Dat said he just "let nature take its course." On the way back to the mansion, he actually apologized to the other comics for not going up against Geoff sooner. |
