In 1947 our family moved from Salt Lake City, Utah seven miles North to Bountiful. I began my 3rd grade at Stoker Elementary in Bountiful. Imagine my surprise when I saw many of my classmates from Washington Elementary in Salt Lake. In 1947 many families we knew moved as we did to the suburbs.  Lawrence Slotboom, Michael Haywood, Joyce Perry, Rex Martin and several others, who's names elude my memory, were classmates in Salt Lake and were still classmates but in a different school in a small town. When we moved from Salt Lake in 1947 the trolleys were still running. There were still ice men wearing leather aprons sitting on horse drawn carts delivering ice to the few people who still did not have electric refrigerators. The winter skies, in Salt Lake, as Robert W Service would say, were a "greasy black" from the thousands of homes still burning coal. I remember looking up and down our street, in Salt Lake, seeing rows of houses belching thick black smoke from the chimneys. The environmentalists were probably turning over in their mothers wombs. Bountiful was a clean and  young community. Most houses were heated with natural gas and the crime rate was very low. Bountiful was fast becoming Salt Lake's bed room.
