Money, Money, Money $$$

The average earnings for all veterinarians in B.C. were $52,800 in 2000. Among professional occupations who perform health diagnosis and treatment, more veterinarians (62%) work full-time and full-year . These veterinarians earned an average of $56,300, which is lower than the earnings of most other health professionals. Still, they are substantially higher than the average for all occupations in the province. The respective all-occupation averages in the province in 2000 were $32,100 and $44,200.

Earnings depend on experience and location. Industry sources indicate that earnings for an entry-level veterinarian range from $40,000 to $50,000 per year. For an experienced veterinarian, especially in private practice, earnings can be much higher.

This is a very small occupation in B.C. but it has experienced significant growth in the past decade. There were 970 workers in 2001, up from 500 in 1990.
