Working Industry

Industry sources indicate that this profession has become highly competitive in B.C. because of the rapid growth in the number of practitioners over the past decade. This is especially true for those in small animal practice, which accounts for approximately 80% of the current workers. Industry sources suggest there is currently an over-concentration of practitioners in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and Okanagan.

Veterinarians mainly work in professional, scientific and technical services (95%). A small number of veterinarians (3%) are employed in educational services. They are located all over the province, with the largest share (50%) in the Lower Mainland. There are 28% on Vancouver Island, 19% in the Southern Interior and 7% in Northern B.C.
