Developing A Program

Leah Walter, Ken Boothe, and Glenys Waters list several important steps in developing a successful reading incentive program:

1.  "Consider the factors that may affect your choice of reading approaches used in your reading program" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

            - What are the needs of your kids?
            - What type of community do you live in?
            - Are the parents active in your school?
            - What funding is available for the program?
            - What length of program is needed or will be most successful?
            - What personnel are available? Are teachers, parents, and community
members will to help or take part in the program?
            - What is your school's philosophy of education?
            - What approaches to reading programs have already taken place? Have they
been successful?  Why or why not?

2.   "Consider what reading approach might be most applicable for your situation" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

            - Considering the factors in number one, what approaches would be most
            successful?

3.  "Look at the different types of reading programs that have been developed" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

            - Examine the different programs available and the strengths and weaknesses of
each.   Is there a way to combine programs or take the best from various
programs to best meet the needs of your school?

4.  "Choose and modify the most applicable reading program to fit your situation" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

            - Be sure to plan all details, gain support and approval from necessary
individuals, and consider all important factors (see #1) when choosing and
                adapting your program.

5.  "Develop and produce the instructional materials" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

6.  "Train personnel"  (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

7. "Implement the reading program" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

8. "Evaluate the reading program" (Walters, Boothe, & Waters).

        - Be sure to maintain statistics and anecdotal information to evaluate your program
to determine its success as well as how to improve it in the future.
