Ben Franklin Elementary This magnet school offers several reading incentive programs including the 100 Book Club, Book It, Reading Honor Roll, and Count on Reading.  http://sparkie.gnofn.org:88/

Book Chain Implemented by several schools, the idea behind this program is to create a chain that encircles the entire school.  Math classes estimate the number of links needed, and the chain is suspended from the library ceiling until enough links are reached.  The day the chain is taken outside the school to be wrapped around the school is a media event day.  Website no longer available:

Celebrate 2000 Read The current (1999) program focused on Japan and China.  In an earlier program, there was a school goal to read 6000 books.  Then, the librarian will eat cake without using her hands.  For every additional X number of books read, another teacher joins her. Franklin Area School District A variety of reading incentive programs and events are offered at Central and Sandycreek Elementary Schools to encourage students to read.   Each November, the library sponsors a PARP program while a separate program is offered in April to celebrate School Library Media Month.  Special events include R.E.D. Grover Cleveland High School Sponsors a library club where students are charged the "dues" of reading one book a month.  They discuss the book at lunches and parties help by the librarian. Site appears to no longer be available:

Morton Grove Public Library

Morton Grove, IL

In this neat program, children joins teams at the Dinosaur Derby.  After signing up for the program, they read books and listen to tapes, CDs, etc.  while tracking their time. They earn points for their team as well as "Dino Dollars" which can be used to buy school supplies.  The winning team receives a pizza party. http://www.webrary.org/

Ohlone Bookworm The year is divided into three parts.  Depending upon the student's grade level, s/he must read a certain number of books and complete a form.  There is a special carnival at the end of the year. http://wccusdgate.wccusd.k12.ca.us/

Parkside's ROAR (Reach Out And Read) Has GE Graphics as a sponsor.  Students and parents sign off that they read a book to earn prizes.  There is also competition among classes. Website no longer available:

Reader to Reader Students read books and then write a postcard telling about the book.  They address the postcard to: Any grade Xth student, City, State, Zip Code -- Postmaster, please deliver this to a school with this grade. Site appears to no longer be available:

Western PA School For the Deaf Had a (lower grades) reading incentive program called the Great Snowball Book Blitz.   North and South Pole Teams were created and competed against each other.   In the upper grades, the theme reading rainbow was used.   http://www.wpsd.org/

White Marsh Elementary School This school has several reading incentive programs, including Bear Reading, Baysox Reading And Bookmark Contest, and Read Across Maryland. http://www.smcps.k12.md.us/

Winslow Schools For every ten books read, students receive a coupon to spend in the PTO bookstore.  The program started at the beginning of the school year and runs through the last Friday of the year.  Each morning, students can tell the reading teacher about the book they read while she is on hall duty.  She then gives them a sticker and a report form which they return to their classroom teacher. Wren's Media Center This school offers a neat program which, during the 1998-99 school year had the theme of  the "Magic of Reading."  Program requirements varied depending upon the grade level of the student.  Participants earned a special celebration while top readers earned limo rides to Chuck E Cheese and a Toys R Us shopping trip.   The school also uses the Reading Counts program.

Yelm Middle School and Yelm High School
