Grand President Chris Stecher Dickey holds
the Eta Psi charter with Charter President Kristine Bania, during the Eta Psi
initiation dinner The Eta Psi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi was installed on Saturday, May 2nd, 1998, at the Casa Del Roma Banquet Hall in Valparaiso, Indiana. We were honored to be initiated and installed by International Grand President Chris Stecher Dickey! It was a very special evening for everyone.

The process began in 1996-1997, when several of the sororities at Valparaiso University expressed interest in "going national" and affiliating with National Panhellenic Council organizations. Organizations were invited to campus to make presentations about their sororities and women's fraternities, and Valpo's eight sororities then began the process of finding the best match for their members. The Valparaiso University sorority Delta Chi Epsilon affiliated with Alpha Delta Pi in 1997, and was finally initiated in 1998.

We honor the following charter members of the Eta Psi Chapter, who contributed to the chapter's development from initiation through graduation:

Kristine Bania, Charter President
Hollie Adams Andrea Bender Suzanne Bolur
Heidi Burrell Windy Caudill Melissa Cwik
Susan Gasaway Kimberly Giles Kelly Gore
Torie Haldi Shannon Halm Allison Hingst
Julia Johnston Linda Jo Kornowski Jennifer McNish
Ruth Miller Kelly Moore Carolyn Moy
Carrie Moyer Lana Muck Sarah Oberlander

Delta Chi Epsilon Sorority was founded on October 14, 1944, at Valparaiso University. It became the fifth social sorority on the Valparaiso campus. Its members, known as Delts or Delta Chi's, were active in many campus organizations. The Delts had a house at 804 Mound Street, and members lived there until the sororities were moved into Scheele Hall in 1961.

On March 15, 1965, the sorority refounded itself as Phi Omega Sorority. The members remained active in many aspects of student life. These members were known as the Phi-O's. The sorority's colors were yellow and white until 1991, when the sorority changed its colors to maroon and navy. Its mascot was the turtle, its flower was the yellow rose, and its motto was Semper Priorsum -- Always Progressing.

Corporation Board meetings were traditionally held the Saturday of Homecoming and the Saturday of Spring Weekend, usually around 10 am or 11 am in the morning. Homecoming meetings began after the parade, and Spring Weekend meetings included a demonstration of the Songfest routine! Donations, membership dues, and historical information were often given to the Corporation or the Sorority during Corporation Meetings.

On January 6, 1992, the sorority rededicated itself as Delta Chi Epsilon. Known as Deltas or Delta Chi's, the members were active in many campus organizations, from Student Senate to the University Theatre to the Alumni Office. The colors were changed to maroon, navy, and cream, and the mascot became the dove. The yellow rose and motto were kept.

The Delta Chi Epsilon / Phi Omega 50th anniversary was held during Homecoming Weekend, October 1994. Many alumnae from the sorority were present, including some of our founding members! A good time was had by all.

During 1996-1997, some of the sororities at Valparaiso University explored the process of affiliating with national organizations. During 1997 and 1998, each of the eight local women's organizations became nationally affiliated:

  • Alpha Xi Epsilon became the Indiana Theta chapter of Pi Beta Phi
  • Alpha Phi Delta became the Gamma Upsilon chapter of Delta Delta Delta
  • Gamma Phi became the Zeta Iota chapter of Gamma Phi Beta
  • Delta Phi Kappa (Kappa Tau Zeta) became the Delta Xi chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau (now closed)
  • Delta Chi Epsilon (Phi Omega) became the Eta Psi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi
  • Kappa Psi Omega became the Zeta Psi chapter of Kappa Delta
  • Phi Beta Chi became the Eta Delta chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma
  • Chi Sigma Xi (Sigma Theta) became the Alpha Lambda chapter of Chi Omega
