Formal RecruitmentAt Valparaiso University, Formal Recruitment is held in January of each school year, with mandatory Panhellenic orientations held during the fall semester. Women who are even partially interested in recruitment should attend all of the pre-recruitment Panhellenic events!
What is Recruitment?Recruitment is the process by which a sorority takes in new members. Previously, recruitment was known as "rush." During recruitment, potential new members meet with sorority members and get to know each other. Formal Recruitment is a time when freshmen women and upperclass women can meet members of all of the sororities on Valparaiso's campus. At the end of the formal recruitment week, prospective members attend preference parties of two sororities. Potential new members rank their interest in the sororities they have visited, and sororities list the potential new members that they would like to offer membership to. A committee matches the preferences of sororities and rushees, and offer bids to women in an attempt to match women with their preferred greek-letter organization. Each prospective member will then choose whether to accept the bid. If a sorority does not reach quota during formal recruitment, or is still below its total member capacity (as set by the university) after recruitment, it may participate in Continuous Open Recruitment. This is an informal process in which prospective members get to know the members of one or two organizations in a more relaxed atmosphere. Sororities participating in Continuous Open Recruitment often have a more structured recruitment week in the fall for upperclassmen, and a more informal COR process after formal recruitment in the spring. Please note that women interested in joining any of Valparaiso's sororities must have second semester freshman status and a 2.25 cumulative grade point average at the time they pledge a sorority. Alpha Delta Pi requires a 2.25 cumulative grade point average for all of its members, and a 2.50 cumulative grade point average for any member who wishes to serve as an officer. ADPi also expects each chapter and all upperclass members to maintain a cumulative GPA at or above the Panhellenic average GPA or all-college women's average GPA, whichever is higher. Scholarship is a priority for members of Alpha Delta Pi. For more information about campus-wide Panhellenic Recruitment, and an overview of VU's Greek Organizations, please visit Going Greek, a guide to the Greek System at Valparaiso University. Women who have questions about membership in ADPi may contact Recruitment Vice President Kate Minnich, at smaller_fish@hotmail.com. ![]()
