Funny Words

English has some funny words
They give my mind the jitters
They sound the same to you and me,
But are spelled with different letters.
There's see and sea
And be and bee
It's terrible confusing!
There's new and knew
And through and threw.
It's really not amusing!
There's deer and dear
And here and hear.
It's horribly disturbing!
There's there and their
And bare and bear.
It's really most perturbing!

Phonics ~ Phonemic Awareness ~ Spelling

I own and recommend
each of these books.
The only hard part is trying to decide which one has helped me the most.  For first grade and up, I'd recommend starting with Cunningham and Pinnell.  For kindergarten and pre-emergent readers and writers, Wiley Blevins' phonemic awareness books can't be beat for fun activities that teach.

Phonics They Use:
Words for Reading and Writing
by Patricia Cunningham
Are you tired of phonics worksheets that don't make sense? Are you ready for something that really works?  This is  my favorite book for working with Word Walls and teaching phonics in a fun and easy fashion.  This book covers the Working With Words block of the 4 Blocks method.  It's packed full of ready-to-use, fun learning games and activities that will get your students excited and involved.  A must-have for 4 Blocks teachers and anyone who wants to accelerate reading, writing, and spelling in their classroom!

Easy Lessons for Teaching Word Families: Hands-On Lessons That Build Phonemic Awareness, Phonics,
Spelling, Reading, and Writing Skills
by Judy Lynch
This wonderful new book is getting LOTS of use in my classroom right now!  I found it the first week of March, and have been using it 3 days a week since then. Lynch's book is the perfect accompaniment to Cunningham's Making Words  and Phonics They Use.  The lessons are easy to follow and build upon each other in a systematic fashion that appeals to kids and teachers, using word families and high frequency words.  Highly recommended!
