Writing & Writer's Workshop

*** Here is a sheet I give to all my students' families, ***
taken directly from Dancing With The Pen:

New Zealand Teachers' Beliefs About
Literacy Learning and Teaching

Reading and writing experiences should be "child-centered."

Reading and writing for meaning are paramount.

Writing should have purpose and meaning.

Learning Literacy must always be rewarding.

Reading and writing are inseparable processes.

Children learn to read and write by reading and writing many different kinds of texts.

Reading and writing are powerful tools for learning.

Reading and writing fulfill a variety of functions.

The best approach to teaching reading and writing is a combination of approaches.

Good first teaching is essential for continuing success in reading and writing.

The foundations of literacy are laid at home in the early years.

Reading and writing flourish in a supportive community.

Success at reading and writing encourages further reading and writing.

~ From Dancing With The Pen, by the New Zealand Ministry of Education

~~~~~
"Dancing in all its forms cannot be excluded from the curriculum of all noble education:  dancing with the feet, with ideas, with words, and need I add that one must also be able to dance with the pen?"
~ Frederich Nietzsche
Dancing With The Pen ~ The Learner as Writer
from Richard C. Owen Publishing ~ New Zealand
Several schools in our district were fortunate enough to be trained
in the Richard Owen's model of Balanced Literacy.
This is an outstanding book on the Writing Process and organizing your Writer's Workshop for maximum effect and learning.
In addition to the terrific work coming out of New Zealand on developing literacy,
the work of Donald Graves and Lucy Calkins has been at the forefront of teaching writing for over a decade.  Each of their books below will help you become a better teacher of writing to students of all ages.
The Art of Teaching Writing
by Lucy McCormick Calkins ~ from Heinemann
An outstanding resource!
Living Between the Lines
by Lucy McCormick Calkins ~ from Heinemann
A newer book by Calkins, that goes deeper on how to get your students writing.
New ideas, suggestions, philosopies, and more.
A Fresh Look at Writing
by Donald Graves ~ from Heinemann
One of my personal favorites!
Build a Literate Classroom
Reading-Writing Teacher's Companion
by Donald Graves ~ from Heinemann
Writing:  Teachers & Children at Work
by Donald Graves ~ from Heinemann
And With a Light Touch:
Learning About Reading, Writing, and Teaching With First Graders
by Carol Avery and Donald Graves
This is the first book I purchased on setting up and implementing a Writer's Workshop.  I heard Avery speak at the Whole Language Umbrella Conference several years ago, and I couldn't wait to try out her techniques in my own classroom.   This is a terrific book on how to create an integrated-curriculum classroom, where children are immersed in meaningful tasks while learning to read and write.  Inspirational, easy to use, delightful to read, and grounded in literacy research.  Highly recommended!
