Integrated Curriculum & Balanced Literacy

And With a Light Touch:
Learning About Reading, Writing, and Teaching With First Graders
by Carol Avery and Donald Graves

This is the first book I purchased on setting up and implementing a Writer's Workshop.  I heard Avery speak at the Whole Language Umbrella Conference several years ago, and I couldn't wait to try out her techniques in my own classroom.   This is a terrific book on how to create an integrated-curriculum classroom, where children are immersed in meaningful tasks while learning to read and write.  Inspirational, easy to use, delightful to read, and grounded in literacy research.  Highly recommended!

Inside the Classroom  ~ Teaching Kindergarten and First Grade
by Bobbi Fisher (1996)
I've taught K-1 for the past two years, and straight kindergarten or first grade for many years before that.  While each grade has some qualities that are unique, kinders and first graders have many things in common and their classrooms need to address their needs.  This collection of articles by Fisher (many of which first appeared in Teaching Pre K/8)  will help teachers learn how to set up a classroom environment conductive to learning, how to create a positive classroom community, how to use  reading and writing throughout the curriculum, how to assist emergent and initial readers, how to answer spelling questions, and how to conduct a "visitors day."  By the author of Joyful Learning.

Joyful Learning: A Whole Language Kindergarten
by Bobbi Fisher (1991)
Although the term Whole Language is no longer politically correct (it's been replaced by Balanced Literacy, and I think the two are fairly interchangeble), this is an outstanding and inspirational book!  Fisher describes her kindergarten classroom and how it evolved into an integrated curriculum environment.  I've used this book for many years in creating a classroom with developmentally-appropriate activities.  All early childhood educators should own this book.

Thinking and Learning Together:
Curriculum and Community in a Primary Classroom
by Bobbi Fisher and Pat Cordiero (1995)  The latest book from Bobbi Fisher on how to build a classroom filled with thriving learners.  Excellent information.

 Looping Handbook: Questions and Answers
by Jim Grant
Grant's earlier book on looping, The looping handbook : teachers and students progressing together  is now out of print and has been replaced by this newer, more comprehensive book in an easy to understand format.
