What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis ("MS") is a disease of the brain and spinal cord caused by an unknown agent that gradually destroys the myelin covering (the fatty sheath surrounding nerve fibres), resulting in a temporary interruption or disordered transmission of nerve impulses. The damage is in the form of 'scars' or sclera which give the condition its name. Particularly affected are those nerves concerned with vision, sensation, and the use of limbs. These patches of demyelinated nerve tissue produced by the disease may, in some cases, eventually disrupt nerve impulse transmission to the point of permanent paralysis.

Multiple sclerosis has a worldwide distribution but occurs mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. Most cases are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. The onset of multiple sclerosis is usually marked by the temporary appearance of the following symptoms, either alone or in combination: weakness or trembling of a limb or extremity while in use, mistiness or loss of vision, disturbances of sensation, unsteadiness in walking, giddiness, double vision, and defective control of the bladder.

These early symptoms tend to clear up (remission) but then usually recur at intervals of months or years (relapse). The symptomatic attacks may gradually become more severe, and some symptoms afflict the patient permanently. Eventually the impairment of motor control can develop into complete paralysis. The disease is seldom rapidly fatal, although insurance companies do tend to load MS patients, even those recently diagnosed and otherwise in excellent health.

This seems to paint a pretty bleak picture, what with potential paralysis, blindeness, incontinence, and so on. However, a vast number of people with MS continue to lead very fulfilling lives, holding down jobs, parenting and doing all the things we all consider 'normal'.

The greatest problems with MS are these: firstly, no-one quite knows what causes it. Theories range from food allergy (gluten [see my coeliac page], yeast, diary products), through viruses. Much research has been and is being carried out. I will be including more links on this once I've checked them all out.

The next greatest problem is how to treat (manage) the illness. Again, there seem to be almost as many treatments as sufferers! Some of these are again on the 'net, and I have tried to source as many as I can.

Partners

In addition, those (especially partners) supporting MS patients have their own problems. There is a good site here. Alternatively, if you want to talk to me, please mail me!, or get me on ICQ - number 5720564 - the last link pages me immediately!

Yoga for Health Foundation

The Yoga For Health Foundation is based in Biggleswade. Founded by Howard Kent, it is a non-profitmaking organisation devoted to helping people to manage their health better. They have a great deal of experience dealing with the disabled, and run courses aimed specifically at people with MS.

They have a variety of courses available, from daylong seminars through weekend 'breaks' to longer residential courses. As well as providing advice on how yoga can help, they have a beautiful site, surrounded by fields, trees, and a lake at the end of their grounds. Food is exclusively vegetarian, but don't let that put you off! On the three occasions I have been there, even the most dedicated carnivores enjoyed every meal!

Courses include traditional Yoga excercises, breathing and meditation techniques and "chair excercises"

Facilities for the disabled are excellent, with gentle ramps inside and out, and a stairlift. The staff are well used to coping with people with all levels of physical ability and the courses are designed such that everyone can do something. Tapes and books are also available from the address below.
