Chapter 11
The seat Janet was being
forced to sit in was the kind that has been worn out,
duct taped and worn out again a few dozen
times Shifting to try and avoid
being poked by a wayward spring popping through
the upholstery, Janet
decided to try and sound less frightened.
"So... are we going all the way to
Harrisburg?" she asked.
He grinned wildly.
"You've got it, Jan Jan!"
"Then what?"
"Haven't you been
listenin' to me, woman?" he sighed. "I'm gonna show you that
I'm the guy you should be with."
"Forgive me for asking,
but.. how do you plan to do that?"
He gave a short maniacal
laugh, tapping the gun against his leg. "Oh, now come
on, you're tryin' to spoil your surprise.
You just sit back and enjoy, baby. Axel's in
charge today."
She stopped talking.
She knew the fear wouldn't leave her voice any other way.
"You saw him-- last night?
Are you sure, Belinda?"
"Well-- no, I'm not
positive, it was for just an instant, but... he left an impression,
what can I say. I thought it could be him."
She collapsed helplessly in a chair
facing Trevor's desk.
"Why didn't you tell
us?" Trevor asked, as his mind raced ahead to what this
possibility meant.
"Trevor, you two were
finally getting a chance to kick back and enjoy your
engagement. I just... couldn't bear to worry
you, especially when I wasn't certain
about it myself."
"I've gotta check
out a few more places first," he planned out loud.
"Holidays, Linden House, McKays, my house
again. If she's not at any of those
places now, maybe someone's seen her. After
that..." Trevor rubbed his face
anxiously.
"Then we call Derek?"
Belinda guessed, finishing his statement. He nodded,
fighting the lump in his throat forming at
the thought of Janet being in danger.
"I'll call the restaurants,"
Belinda told him, heading for the phone in the front office.
"You check your place and Erica's, and we'll
go from there. We'll find her, Trevor."
He sat down and stared
at the phone several moments before picking it up. "We
HAVE to," he said softly.
"You're gonna love this
place, baby. Today is two-for-one on orders of cheese
fries!"
Axel took the Nova
into an old fashioned drive-up restaurant two miles into
Harrisburg city limits. Parking as far from
the actual restaurant as possible, he rolled
down the window and pointed to the menu. "Isn't
this great?"
"A regular miracle
of modern technology," Janet quipped.
Axel appeared unable
to process what she'd said. "You've gotta be starving.
Name your poison! My treat!"
"I'm-- not hungry."
"Awe, come on! You
used to pack it in like nobody's business." Axel rang the
waitress and ordered 2 chili dogs-- with the
cheese fries, of course-- and a couple
of Cokes.
"That used to be your favorite," he informed
Janet after shutting off the
microphone.
She rolled her eyes.
"Chili dogs were YOUR favorite. I liked gyros."
"Well they've don't have any of that foreign
food here, anyway." Axel began
fiddling with the car radio. "Hey, would you
listen to that!" he shouted excitedly.
"What?" All she heard
was a Rod Stewart song.
"That's OUR song!
Don't you remember, cuddling in the back seat, listening to
this... 'Tonight's the night...it's gonna
be all right..." he started to try and sing
along.
"Oh, for God's sake..."
Janet muttered.
"Cause I love you
girl, ain't nobody gonna stop us now..." Axel reached for
her hand. She tried to snatch it away, but
he held on too tight. "Janet, are you
gonna play hard to get on our first date in
20 years?"
"Our- what?"
"Keep your yap shut
with this waitress, got it?" he snapped at her as he saw the
chili dogs approaching.
As Belinda returned to
Trevor with no leads, she could tell he had a different story.
"Is the e-mail still on there, Tim? OK, read
it to me... dammit, that's what Erica
said...no, I'll take it from here. And not
a word to Amanda, OK? I'll be home soon."
He set the phone down
and stared out the window. "He's got her, Belinda," he
sighed.
