Chapter 3
Everything was in bloom
at the park where Trevor and Janet strolled hand in
hand, munching on their ice cream cones, chatting
about the party just thrown
in her honor. "So you were in on the whole
thing, huh?" Janet grinned.
"Well, you know...
Belinda was hard at work on it already, being your Maid of
Honor and all... I just crossed the I's and
dotted the T's."
"Yeah, I bet." She
took another bite out of the cone. "It blew me away, Trevor. I
never dreamed I'd have so many great friends."
He popped the rest
of his cone in his mouth. "Babe, as they say... you ain't seen
nothin' yet!" He squeezed her hand, and noticed
her shiver. "Uh-oh... too early in
the season for summer desserts, huh? You're
freezing!"
"Mmm-mmm..." she shook
her head, her mouth full. After she swallowed, she
answered "Ice cream headache!"
"Ooh, on! Come here,"
he laughed as they came to a stop. He rubbed his
hands together to warm them, then placed them
gently on Janet's head,
smoothing her blonde tresses. "How's that?"
he asked.
"Better..."
"Wait--" he drew her
closer into his arms, wrapping them around her as he buried
his face in her hair.
She sighed along with
him. "BEST", she told him. "Ice cream headache or not."
"I've got something
that'll warm you up even more..."
She clucked her tongue
and tipped away from him. "In a public park? Trevor!"
"Well, now that we
know what's on your mind," he cackled, reaching inside his
coat and pulling out a brochure. "I was referring
to this."
She nibbled her cone
with one hand and studied the pamphlet with the other.
"Isn't this the one I showed you for Amanda's
birthday party last year? You mean
you saved it?"
"I'm a sentimental
guy," he shrugged.
"Wow..." her eyes
suddenly turned back to Trevor. "You're right, her birthday is
almost here again. We'd better get cracking
and plan a party, huh?"
"And we will... but
this time, the paradise is for us."
Her eyes narrowed
thoughtfully in curiosity.
"What do you think
of a honeymoon in Hawaii?"
Now her eyes lit up
with joy.
"Isn't it perfect?
A year ago we brought the finest luau to Pine Valley... this time the
finest in Pine Valley go to the luau."
"Where the pineapple's
fresh and the hula dancers are genuine," she added,
beaming.
"And there'll be enough
Don Ho wannabees to keep me from even THINKING of
picking up a ukulele!" He took her face into
his hands. "It's heaven on earth,
Janet, you said so yourself last year. Whadyah
say now?"
"I'd say I already
HAVE my heaven on earth," she answered softly, eyes shining.
"Right here... right now..."
He interrupted her
briefly with a quick but passion laced kiss, accepting the
compliment.
"But... I guess I
could stand Hawaii for a little while."
"Unless you had something
else in mind?"
"No chance! This is
perfect, just like you said." She sent his senses reeling with
another kiss.
Agreeing to proceed
with honeymoon plans the next day, they walked on
through the park, chatting about Amanda's
birthday plans until they found
themselves alongside the fence of the cemetery.
"Let's go in and see her," Janet
beckoned. "I want to show you something."
"Gee, I can't imagine!"
he teased.
The pink tulip in
front of Natalie's grave looked a little different at night, with the
moonlight showing off it's closed petals,
but it was there just the same. "Now,
you're not going to freak out when this tulip
runs it's course... or is flattened by one
false step-- or is mowed over? Right?" Trevor
wanted to know.
"You mean it's not
going to just stay perfect forever?" she deadpanned. Then with
a giggle she knelt down to get a closer look.
"No, Trevor... this flower has served it's
purpose... quite nicely, I might add." But
as she reached out to touch it, several
petals fell off in her hand.
"Whoops." Trevor knelt
down behind her, hugging her shoulders and kissing the top
of her head. "Looks like the course has started
already," he chuckled softly.
"Yeah," she added,
just a little nervously. "Looks like it."
