Belinda greeted the
twosome at the door. "Janet, what's going on?"
"Is Amanda okay? Has
anyone been by?"
"Yes, she's in bed,
and no, no one's been here... Are you all right?"
"Why does everyone
keep asking me that? So I saw Axel Green for real. So one of
the most hurtful people to ever darken my
doorstep has returned. Big deal! Who
cares?" She blew past Belinda to check the
windows for lurking faces.
"She'll be fine,"
Trevor assured Belinda quietly.
"What was Axel Green
here for? How did he find her?"
"We're still figuring
that out, but somehow he heard about the wedding... and
he's trying to get one last chance, I guess.
Do you think Amanda's asleep yet?"
"Well, I only left
her room 15 minutes ago..."
"I don't think he's
figured out this address yet," Janet said, without much relief in
her voice, returning from the window.
"Sweetheart, he's
probably high-tailed it out of town by now!"
"Do you really believe
that, Trevor?"
He paused a moment
before dropping his head. "No..."
"I didn't think so."
She dropped into a chair. "Why did I ever have to dig up Axel
Green's name in the first place? Of all the
people I could have come up with--
but no, I had to go with THAT loser!"
Trevor crouched down
next to her and held her hand.
"Janet," Belinda told
her friend, "You hadn't seen this guy in years! There's no way
you could have predicted he'd show up."
"And if Axel keeps
showing up, we'll take care of it." A noise at the top of the stairs
got Trevor's attention. "Mandible... what'cha
doing out of bed?"
She let out a sniffle
instead of a voice. "Sweetie, what's wrong?" Janet said,
looking up.
"It's... all my fault..."
The three adults looked
at each other, alarmed. Trevor went over and led her
downstairs by the hand. WHAT'S all your fault,
Amanda?"
"I-- just wanted to
thank him for leaving Mommy alone... now he's bothering her
again and making her sad..."
"How did you thank
him?" Trevor asked, drawing her into his lap as they sat on the
couch.
"I-- I sent him a
letter."
"A letter?" Janet
asked. "Where did you get his address?"
"I didn't. It was
on the computer." She told them how it happened-- as much as
she knew, anyway.
Trevor looked over
at Belinda and Janet. "Sounds like a result of Tim's private eye
skills and Harold's bad timing."
"Maybe these two take
after their dad a little too much," Janet added ruefully.
"I'm sorry," Amanda
said, "I was only trying to help--"
Janet joined Trevor
and Amanda on the couch. "It's okay, Amanda. No harm
done."
Belinda gathered her
things. "I'll let you two tuck her back in," she said. "Janet, are
we still getting together tomorrow to work
on the plans?"
She nodded. "I'm not
letting ANYTHING get in the way of this wedding." She gave
Trevor's shoulder a squeeze.
"Thanks for sticking
around," he told Belinda. "You really helped us out."
"Anything for you
guys." She scruffed Amanda's hair and then was gone.
