Age based on 1880 census showing him age 21. This census also
references James father as being born in Canada which conflicts
to other family data stating he was from Ireland. More search
needed.

James O'Neil was not listed with his brother Thomas at the
Lancaster's in the 1870 census. It is clear from other
information that Ann Lancaster was either Thomas and James
mother or aunt. Ann's death certificate records her name as
Ann Hart. With this information in hand, also note that the
1870 Sanilac Twp (Sanilac County) census shows a James O'Neil,
age 11, born in Canada, living with Bryan Hart (age 35) and
Catherine Hart (age 75). This is more than coincidence and
definitely ties these families to Lanark County, Ontario and to
Patrick and Bridgett (Hart) O'Neil. Further evidence is needed
but it appears that Bryan would be an uncle and Catherine a
grandmother to James and Thomas O'Neil. In 1880, James is
living with his aunt/mother and her husband. (In the 1880
census, Bryan Hart is married to Caroline and they have 5
children but there is no James living with them.)

In 1900 Sanilac County, Marion Twnshp, James O'Neil, 40, Mary -
wife, 37, Margaret -daughter, 14, Julia -daughter, 12, William
F. - son, 11, Sarah Ellen - daughter, 9, Mary - daughter, 7
and James - son, 1. Next door were John Lancaster, his wife
Ellen Jane, their children, Sarah M., Lauretta, Clara E.,
Joseph T., Jane, and John's father, Joseph. In 1910, I found
James Family still in Sanilac county but in Minden Twnshp,
dwelling# 147, family#147. James O'Neil, his wife Mary E and
their children Frank, Nelly, Mary, James, Annie and Winnifred.
Then in 1920 census I found James in the City of Detroit, 1572
Ellery, occupation, manufacturer in autofactory. Wife, Mary E,
and children, James P, Anna C, and Winnifred.
