For 15 years, Mary Jane Minard Smith ran the first boarding
house in
Grindstone City. It was built and operated by the Wallace
Company. In
"History of Grindstone 1938-1959" Mrs Mary Jane Smith - widow
of Tom Smith is the oldest living pioneer. She is 92 yrs old.
She spends her summers
at Grindstone with daughter Ella (Mrs. Ella Copeland) and
winters with other
children in Wlyria, Ohio. Mrs. M.J. Smith also ran the
boarding house in New River for several years.

"Jane" Minard, age 18, is recorded in the census as a
"domestic" at the Cooper family household. Assumption, based
on age, is that this is Mary Jane.
