Spectre spiders are powerful undead that haunt the most desolate and deserted of places. They hate all life and light.

Spectre spiders appear as semitransparent though when more than twenty feet away they are usually mistaken for Huge spiders. In fact, spectre spiders were once of the Huge variety when they were living and retain the same lairs as many of their living brethren. They also retain the tactic of hiding in camouflaged tunnels and holes and waiting to leap as much as 30 feet through the air at unsuspecting victims. Their opponents suffer a -6 to surprise rolls when attacked in this manner.

Spectre spiders posses no poison instead they drain life energy.

Combat: Spectre spiders exist primarily on the Negative Material Plane and can therefore be attacked by beings on the Prime Material Plane only with magical weapons. Daylight makes them powerless by weakening their ties to the Negative Material Plane.

The chilling bite of a spectre spider drains energy from living creatures. A successful attack inflicts 1-6 points of damage and drains one life energy levels from the victim. Any being totally drained of life energy by a spectre spider becomes a full-strength spectre. The victim loses all control of his personality and may become more or less powerful than before, depending on his level and class before becoming a spectre.

Spectre spiders are immune to all sleep, charm, hold, and cold-based spells, as well as poisons and paralyzation attacks. Holy water inflicts 2-8 points of damage when it strikes a spectre spider. A raise dead spell apparently reverses the undead status, destroying the spectre spider immediately if a saving throw versus spell is failed.
They can be turned as Shadows.

Habitat/Society: Most spectre spiders like in packs, since once a spectre spider invades a group of Huge spiders, they usually all become spectre spiders under the leadership of the first main spectre spider. Once the main spectre spider is slain, the strongest of the others will take over the pack.

Ecology: No one knows where the first spectre spider came from or how it came to be; the few facts detailed above are all that is known with any degree of certainty.
