This grade is an exciting, transitional year for students.
Communication is very important. Please encourage your student to talk about the day's activities and learning. One way is to use the daily homework list and calendar that should be kept in the front of the student's notebook. You will be given my home phone number. Feel free to call me if there is a need. You may also send a note or stop by the classroom after school. A conference can be planned at your request or mine. My goal is for us to work together to make this a productive year for all of "my" children.

Dear new fourth graders,
There are a lot of fun things to look forward to in fourth grade. Some of these things are field trips like the one to Universal Studios Hollywood, (first you have to pass a test). That was really fun! You get to go on rides and watch shows and have a blast!
In Mrs. Young's class you also have to be responsible, too. That means that you have to file all your papers and have everything in on time. If you don't do that though, you get a no-no note. If you get only one no-no note in one month, then you get a Monty Star. If you don't get any no-no notes in a month then you get a yes-yes note and a Monty Star!
In math, you'll do lots of timed speed quizzes, too. If you pass all of the five minute quizzes then you get to be part of a pizza party!
You will also be doing lots of oral reports. Some of these are the dress-up book report, puppet book report, and current events.
I hope you have a good time!
Your ex-fourth grader, Jeff B.
Dear Class of 2000-2001,
Welcome to the Upper Grades. What a great school year to enter 4th grade. It's the last year of the 20th century, and 2001, the first year of the millenium.
But be careful! Here are a few tips for your own personal safety:
There are really 1,332,797 tips, but I've given the most important ones. Follow these safety tips and your school life will be easy.
I really love Mrs. Young's Class. We've done fun projects, and our field trips are the best! You wil have a penpal and a tutee - in other words, you will be his or her tutor.
Your last field trip wil be Universal Studios.
There are some really super book reports, and the Roots Reports in May are great.
Always be sure to have fun and study for tests, or you'll be sorry!
Good luck. Adios, amigo! Sincerely, Melissa S.
Dear Class of 2000-2001,
This will be an exciting year. A year of lots of changes in your life. You will learn different things in Mrs. Youngs' class that at first is a big change and you'll like it. Mrs. Young will teach you to be responsible. This is very important for the 4th grade.
In Mrs. Young's class we do a lot of art projects, (that's fun). We go on a lot of field trips, (that's fun, too). Every month we did book reports. They are not just another book report, we get to do many different kinds. some we do with puppets, some with demonstration. We also get a few "free choice" book reports. My favorite was when I had to pretend I was the character and dress up to tell the story. I can go on and on but I know you have to start class today. Have a great fourth grade year.
Tayler H.
Dear New 4th Graders,
You're finally in fourth grade. You have more opportunities and chances to do things like joining the Monte Vista Orchestra, Math Club, the Spelling Bee, Conflict Managers, and so on. Our class has many different activities like the puzzle table, computers, and extra credit. If you follow directions and listen carefully, you can be successful. I think reading books makes you even more successful. You can get good grades on tests if you study. Mrs. Young is very experienced in teaching and you can learn a lot in just a year. I think having Mogul in the classroom makes you class attractive. You can learn as many things as you want if you ask Mrs. Young many questions.
Sincerely, Julia K.
P.S. Never forget your homework! Start reports early!
Dear new fourth graders,
If you want to be a good student in Mrs. Young's class, study hard, be polite, and make good choices. Some fun things you will do are go to Universal Studios, (an all day field trip). I loved being in Mrs. Young's class.
Sincerely, William T.
Dear New 4th Graders,
I want to tell you about some things you might do. You will do a roots report, music reports and book reports. I had a lot of fun having tutees and penpals. A lot of projects are in science and everybody does them together. You have to do 10 extra credit for language, and math. You have to do 5 extra credit for social studies and scinece. P.E. is fun and the teachers are GREAT! At recess you can stay in and work on puzzles or on your homework or extra credit. You get no-no notes for late work and yes-yes notes for no late work in a month. The can collections are fun because you are in groups to collect and there's a leader, co-leader, and you pick a name for your group. The math masters are fun and you try to do them under 2 minutes and get them all right. The five minute quizzes are fun, but quiz number 8 is the hardest, I think. The field trips are very fun. She gives you a lot of work, but it's very fun.
Best wishes, Michael S.
Dear new fourth graders,
I'm going to tell you about Mrs. Young's class. To be successful in her class, you have to study. There are a lot of fun tests in her class. Turn in a lot of extra credit. It will help you get better grades on your report card. Listen. You will learn a lot more that way. Another very important way is to be creative. Mrs. Young likes creative kids.
Mrs. Young goes on a lot of field trips. They are very fun and not boring. She takes you everywhere. She takes you to the beach, the park, a mission, a court house, to a ranch, and so on. Mrs. Young even takes you to Universal Studios! All the field trips are educational and fun.
Responsibility is very important our room. If you don't turn your work in on time, you get a no-no note. In one month, if you had no no-no notes,to get a yes-yes certificate. If you only got one no-no note you get a Monty Star.
You will do a lot of activities like reading and drawing. Mrs. Young's class is very easy if you just obey. Have a great time in Mrs. Young's class.
Sincerely, Daniel B.
Dear New 4th Graders,
I hope you all have a wonderful year in Mrs. Young's room. To be a successful student in her room, you need to be responsilbe and truthful. You will receive pieces of paper called, no-no-notes, but if you don't get a no-no-note for a whole month then you get a yes-yes-note. I advise you to study hard for tests.
You have many things to look forward to, like the library, pen-pals, making the mural, Cabrillo, Lazy W Ranch, S.S.R. (sustained silent reading), science experiements, art, character education, the mission reports, book reports, and making the friendship books.
Mrs. Young is a wonderful, fun teahcer. She is funny and loves teddy bears (look around the room). Mrs. Young has a garden which looks beautiful.
I hope you have a wonderful year in Mrs. Young's room.
Sincerely, Junnie S.
Dear New 4th Graders,
I think you will really like fourth grade, but you have to work hard and listen good. If you do those things and some other good things you will get good grades and have lots of fun!
Mrs. Young's class is a great class and has lots of field trips. One field trip you have to wake up at 5:00 am and return at 5:00 pm! If you pass a test near the end of school you get to go to Universal Studios!
You won't have to be a tutee anymore! You're going to be a tutor to Mrs. Hardee's students. You will meet about every month and work, make cupcakes or play outside games.
You will have a very, very, very, very, good time in Mrs. Young's class.
Sincerely, Jennifer M.
Dear New 4th Graders,
You're the lucky ones! You are in Mrs. Young's class! If you want to succeed in her class, you should always study for tests. Also, follow the rules and return homeowrk on time. If yo don't you'll be getting no-no notes. When you don't bring homework back on time you receive a no-no note. When you only have one no-no note a month you get a Monty Star. When you don't have any that month you get a Mont Star and a yes-yes note!
In Mrs. Young's class there are can teams for bringing in cans. Mine was Supercan. On field trips you don't have to pay as much for it because of your bringing in cans! When you bring in 100 or more cans in on that day you get a treat bag from a famly! Cool!
One of my favorite field trips was going to Universal Studios. You have to do a test on Hollywood in order to go. You have to get a 70% or higher. I got an A+. It was great there.
I hope you enjoy the year. I had a great time in fourth grade, and so will you!
Have fun! Claire C.
This year our class will be forming recycling teams to help our Earth and to earn money for field trips. Each team will develop strategies to increase collecting efforts. All students should participate if they expect to share the rewards.
Recycling begins in September. Watch the homework list and future flyers for more dates. These days will be the KidsCan school collecting days - the last Tuesday of each month).
A slip for number of cans will need to be returned with the cans for your child to receive credit. The KidsCan Committee will return the slips to me so we can graph teams and maintain individual totals. When we need the $ for field trips, KidsCan will give us our earnings. This way our classroom can earn Monty Bucks. The aluminum cans and plastic bottles go toward our field trips. You may also recycle other things on your own. Take them to a recycling location to redeem and send the $ in an envelope to the classroom on recycling days. Parents must sign envelope to verify that the $ is from recycling. Ralphs give 5 cents per grocery bag that you bring in to use for your groceries. Those 5 cents add up!! May the most creative and active team win. Mrs. Young
This year you will have the opportunity to read a variety of books and have different ways to report. The books you choose may be from: classroom, school, or public library, your home, or may be borrowed from friends. They should be books that you have not read before, and they should be at your reading level - not too easy or too hard. They should be about 100 pages or longer. If you aren't sure about a book, check with me. Turn in reports any day up to the 15th of the month they are due. Book report forms are available in the classroom. Please do a first copy on scratch paper, proofread, and then do your final copy on book report form. Staple pencil copy behind ink copy and get a parent signature. Only neatly done work in ink and cursive will be accepted.
Oral book reports must be scheduled on the sign up sheet. I will put this up about one month ahead. Extra credit book reports may be done anytime. Please lablel them E.C. at the top and put them in the E.C. folder.

Carol Young has a long history with Monte Vista. She has taught here since 1986. In addition, she and her husband Roger were active in the PTA at Monte Vista when their sons, Eric and Corey, attended Monte Vista. She decided to become a teacher because she loves children and enjoys helping them learn. "It's a wonderful feeling to see the 'I've got it!' look appear on their faces."
Mrs. Young attended Occidental College and received a B.A. in Education. She enjoys Math because "it was my favorite when I was a student -- it's like doing a puzzle." Social Studies is also a favorite because "there's so much that's exciting about California," and Science because "the new hands-on approach is challenging and effective." One of Mrs. Young's favorite assignments, a Roots Report, enhances her students' appreciation of Social Studies.
Mrs. Young enjoys many things in her spare time. She is a Dodger's fan and she also enjoys reading mysteries and general fiction. Some of her favorite authors are John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Danielle Steele, Patricia Cornwell, and Jonathon Kellerman When she isn't reading or cooking, Mrs. Young also enjoys working crossword puzzles and gardening. A new hobby for her and her husband, Roger, is playing with their grandson. Her favorite food is chocolate!
Growing up, Mrs. Young's favorite teacher was Mr. Francis who taught high school trigonometry. Something she learned from him which she still finds important today is if a teacher shows an interest and cares about a student, it is a powerful motivator. He encouraged her to aim high and to apply to Occcidental College. Mrs. Young's funniest memory from her years of teaching is the time she wore two different shoes and spent a very "red-faced" day.
Mrs. Young's Homework Tip: Set up a place to work with needed supplies. Get the job done so you have time for other activities you like to do. Do work that makes you proud.
Email Mrs. Young: Home / School - not during summer!
