Bettas should be fed 1 to 5 times per day. Fish that are a year or older can get by with being fed once a day. Fish that are two months old to about 6 months should be fed 2-3 times a day. Fry need to be fed very frequently to grow properly. My staple diet is Hikari baby Cichlid Gold pellets. These are good for young bettas to grow on and adult bettas will spawn when fed this alone. It is better to feed a variety of foods though. I also feed: Tetra Tips, freeze-dried tubifix worms, Golden Pearls, live wingless fruit flies and microworms.
Both live foods can be cultured in deli containers. For the fruit flies, add about a cup of fine corn meal and moisten it. Then add a few grains of dry yeast and the adult fly starter culture. Cut a hole in the top of the container and stick a piece of sponge in it. This will allow air to circulate but keep the flies in. For the microworms the culturing is about the same but just put the lid on, do not cut a hole or use the sponge. When the cultures become liquified you should start a new culture. Existing ones can be kept going by adding a bit more corn meal which will absorb some of the exess liquid. |
