Raising Fry

Home

The secret to raising healthy fry is small frequent water changes. Make sure the water has been dechlorinated and is the same temperature and add it slowly. A small sponge filter can be used to provide a gentle current and keep the water cleaner.  Fry under a week old should be fed liquifry. You can also make infusoria by placing a jar of old tank water by a bright window for a few weeks and by adding a leaf of lettuce. Once the fry are a week old, you can feed live baby brineshrimp and microworms.  At about a month old you can start converting the fry to small pellets such as golden pearls or Hikari Micro pellets. At about 5 weeks of age the fry will begin to get color (like the ones to the right) and by 8 weeks it is possible to tell what color they will be. At 12 weeks old the males should be removed and placed in their own jars before they seriously begin to injure each other. You can tell the males by their longer bodies, tendency to flare at other fry and lengthening fins.  The green and red finned fish at the right is a 12 week old female and the blue fish with longer fins, is a 12 week old male.
