Bettas can be kept in almost any size container. In pet stores they are often found in tiny bowls, no bigger than a fist.  The smallest container that I keep my fish in holds a quart of water. This can be a jar or my favorite, a clear plastic deli container. If you only own a few fish it is best to offer them at least a gallon of water each so that the fish has room to swim around and the fish can go longer between water changes (up to a week). It is a good idea to keep live plants with your fish such as Duckweed, Java Moss, Java Fern or a Dwarf Lily. These plants offer the fish a place to hide as well as keep the water cleaner. Water changes should be done weekly. The new water should be the same temperature and from the same source as the old. Make sure to use a dechlorinating agent. Chlorine will stress or kill a betta.
