Chapter 5
He couldn't move, couldn't speak. It just hurt too much to even try. His legs and arms were strapped in chains, and his body laid bare from the waist up. Eyelids feeling heavy, it hurt like hell trying to open them. He pulled his head up and tried a squint in effort to look around. To one side, some men dressed in black robes stood around a circle, chanting something. They were very creepy-looking; in fact, the whole room itself was dark and eerie. Glancing beside him, he heard a moan. Oh my God, that's Brian! he thought, alarm kicking in. Struggling with the chains, he bumped into his friend.

Suddenly, one of the robed men shouted, "Sir, one of them has awaken."

Feeling every muscle in his body tense, he sucked in his breath. The man in the robe was not human... it was, was... What was it?

The inhumanly creature walked up to him, a sword in hand, and whispered, "Hush, my angelic one." With that, the thing sliced a three-sided figure into his wrists and then a four-sided figure with a diamond in the middle. Screaming, he thrashed and...

...woke in a fright. Beads of sweat slid down his upper torso as his legs struggled to untangle themselves from the sheets. Gasping, he looked around his room. He saw... nothing. Just, nothing. He fell back against the bed in relief.
You're losing it, Nick. He turned to his side and closed his eyes, trying to remember what the hell he had dreamt.

Four hours later, still gazing at books, my eyes started to get blurry. So far we hadn't found anything. None of the books contained anything about the Anointed One. Shifting my eyes, I glanced at Freddie and Claudia.

Somewhere during the seventh book, Freddie must have nodded off into dreamland. He looked so innocent sleeping there: his legs under the table and propped up on the chair across from him, and one arm dangled to the ground while the other served as a pillow to his head on the table. A tiny, liquid spot was forming on his shirt, obviously from his drooling. Okay, so he looked innocently disgusting. Claudia was almost in the same position, but her head was instead laying on a book as her hand held her glasses.

Sighing, I returned to the book in front of me and turned the page.
Kakistos: a form of vampire from the early 1800s; he had cloven hooves and hands, yada, yada... sucks to be him. Nicartheling: a mating ritual done by changing fluids from... okay disgusting; onward. The Anointed One: a God from the underworld, to form chaos and mayhem. Gachnar: A fear demon that can alter the physical surroundings of an area... Oh, fuck. Back up.

"Oh my God!" I shouted, waking up Freddie and Claudia.

"Huh?" Freddie mumbled while rubbing his eyes.

"I, I, I found it!"

Without a moment of hesitation, they ran over to me, obviously now awake. "What does it say?" Claudia asked eagerly.

I cough, clearing my voice, and began to read. "The Anointed One. A God from the underworld, to form chaos and mayhem. It came around 23 BC, in a portal from another dimension. A DiOgeth performed a ritual to cure a member from its own tribe, only it accidentally brought forth the Anointed One into our world." I paused for a second, turning to Freddie to explain. "A DiOgeth was a tribe; they were very religious and thought that they could cure anything by connecting to the Gods." Nodding, Freddie urged me to continue. "Well, it says here, it caused a crisis to the world by killing half of the continents' population off until a DiOgeth destroyed it." I quickly flipped the page, finding it blank. "Shit!" I yelled.

"Was that it?" Freddie asked.

Still searching through the book, I mumbled, "Yeah, I guess." I glimpsed up at him, then at Claudia.

She sat still for a moment pondering, then spoke up. "Well, at least we know what it's capable of doing."

"Oh yeah that's just GREAT!" Freddie said sarcastically. "All we know is that Adam is going to do some kind of ritual to bring back the Anointed One, so he can destroy half the world." His temper rising, he went on, "We don't even know why the fuck he's doing this, what the hell the ritual is, or -- and this is the best part -- how we're going to stop it!" He got up from where he was sitting and forced his fist into the wall. "God damnit!" he cursed.

I got up also, but instead walked to the bookshelf. "I'm going to take home the remainder of the books. You guys need to get some rest." Getting a box, I started piling the books into it. "We've only been at this, for what? Seven hours? I have both of your numbers; I'll call you when I find anything new."

"Are you sure?" Freddie inquired, having regained his composure.

I replied, "Yes, I'm sure. I'll be fine. I don't need that much rest like you guys." Not giving either of them a chance to protest any more, I picked up the box and headed out the door.
