August
16, 1998 - In what capped off the first completed BFL season, Ken
and Rich of the Sparrows and Dragons took the field for their second
meeting of the year. In a game that would set the standard for all
BFL Bowls to come, Ken and Rich put on a spectacular show, in one
of the highest scoring games in the BFL at the time. The game was
filled with highlight catches, tons of intensity, and was the game
that coined the play, "The Long Root Rich Beater."
After
Winning the coin toss, the Dragons elected to throwoff to begin
the game. Ken jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a short drive
which was the first Touchdown in BFL Bowl History. Rich was able
to respond with a Touchdown of his own to tie the game up at 7-7.
The rest of the game continued at the same pace, with both teams
each changing touchdown after touchdown. Some memorable plays from
the first half were Rich's exciting Throwoff return in the second
quarter to tie the score up at 21 and Ken's catch and roll into
the endzone.
With
neither team being able to come up with a defensive stop, the score
slowly started to build up. As the half came to a close, the Sparrows
scored a key touchdown to take a 35-28 lead into the break.
The
second half continued at the same pace as the first. Late in the
4th, Ken caught a 3rd down catch between his legs as he fell to
the ground. This key play kept the Sparrows drive alive and gave
Ken a 56-49 lead. But for every Sparrows score, the Dragons were
able to respond with a score of their own.
With
just under 2 minutes to play , the Sparrows took a 70-63 lead on
a Howie to Ken touchdown reception. Rich now was in possession to
tie the game up as he marched down to mid field. On a what was a
routine catch play, the pass intended for Rich bounced off of Rich's
hands and landed in Ken hands for an interception. Ken would then
run out the remaining clock and seal the win, 70-63. The first and
only turnover of the game turned out to be the play of the game.
Also
at this game, the Howie of the Celts announced at the half that
he will be retiring his team and become the permanent automatic
quarterback for 1999. He was then honored with the first ever, MVP
award, which was named the GoGo Award in his honor. In addition,
Adam announced that he will be joining the league as the Churchill
Koala for 1999.
