HUSTLERS WIN BFL CHAMPIONSHIP! |
|
BFL Bowl XI lived up to its billing as the The Hustlers (5-0) and Gamblers (3-2) battled in an extraordinary game at the battlefield this past Saturday. Never before has a BFL matchup had such energy and emotion from the players and fans alike. We had 26 in attendance. Every play was hard earned and the defensive coverage by teams shows why the two best teams were playing on the grandest stage for the championship. In the end, the Hustlers came out on top, 57-55.
As the countdown to kickoff got underway, Quarterback Howie "Gogo" announced that he will be making his return for this one, replacing Ken who was scheduled to play. And Howie was hot. Completing pass after pass and making passes that seemed impossible.
Neither Mark or Akil had ever won the BFL bowl. This night, we would crown a new champion. The Gamblers won the toss and elected to throwoff. The Hustlers would try to go deep right away but couldn't connect. Akil would then drive the ball down hill converting on 3 key third down plays. Howie would hit Akil in the southern endzone for his first of 16 touchdowns on the day and a 7-0 Hustlers lead.
The Gamblers would respond. Mark drove the ball right back uphill to tie the score at 7.
On the Hustlers next drive, Akil caught pass in the endzone on a leaping catch on won of the nicest plays in BFL Bowl History.
At the end of the first, it was 14-7, Hustlers. During the break, Sean of the Fear was announced as the 2008 BFL MVP.
The teams would exchange touchdown for touchdown both driving the ball with shorted passes. With 13 seconds to play in the half, the Gamblers had one last chance to score a touchdown, trailing 28-21. Akil had shut down the Gamblers deep attack, but on the final play of the half, the Gamblers caught a bullet pass from midfield, and managed to reach the ball past the goal line to send the game into a 28-28 halftime tie.
The start of the 2nd half was the turning point of the game. The Gamblers had the ball and a chance to take the lead for the first time. But Howie and Mark could not get on the same page. After a successful 3rd down conversion, the Gamblers attempted a deep pass into the endzone. Akil was able to leap and catch an amazing one armed interception. On the next play, the Hustlers scored on a barnburner and took a 36-28 lead.
The Gamblers would get back on track offensively, and cut the lead down to 1, 36-35. The Hustlers took a 43-35 lead into the 4th.
The Gamblers scored their 7th touchdown of the game, with just under a minute to go. Mark needed a two point conversion to tie the score up. But once again the Hustlers defense was playing too tight. The two pointer sailed incomplete.
Mark had two chances at the onside throw but Akil stopped both attempts. Akil was able to hold on and win the game, 57-55 as the Hustlers win their first BFL Bowl Championship.
NOTES:
-The Hustlers are now 1-1 in BFL Bowls; The Gamblers are 0-2.
