August
15, 2000- The BFL's third Annual Championship game had been rescheduled
twice due to rain, before finally landing on the 15th of August.
With dark skies above, a cool breeze, and humid conditions, the
Melody faced the expansion Black Knights in one of the most exciting
BFL Bowls ever.
Jason
of the London Melody playing in his 4th BFL Season won the North
Division championship for the first time and was on a 3 game winning
streak, with a playoff win over the Koala. The key to Jason's success
was the best defensive coverage in the league. The mastermind of
the Melody implemented the "3 Sided Box Defense" and was
able to shut down some of the best offenses in the league.
On
the other side was the expansion team, the Norton Black Knights.
John came into the BFL with a burst of speed defeating the Dragons
in his first ever game, and again in a thrilling playoff game. The
Black Knights had the best offense in the entire league, and set
many records with numerous throwoff returns.
The
two teams faced off and matched oneanother touchdown for touchdown.
Each team set them selves up with quality throwoff returns. The
beginning of the game did get off to a slow start. At the end of
the first quarter it was 7-0 Black Knights.
But
in the 2nd quarter, the two teams began to open up the scoring.
Lead by quarterback Howie "Gogo" the teams each put up
21 points. The half ended when John scored the go ahead touchdown
as time expired to take a 28-21 lead into the break.
At
half time, Aaron of the Mustangs was announced as the 2000 MVP "Gogo"
award winner.
By
the time the 4th quarter drew near the two teams really picked up
the intensity. The Melody had not held the lead yet tied the game
up 8 times in the game. Down 42-35, the Melody swiftly tied the
game up on a huge throwoff return with less than 2 minutes to play.
After
the Black Knights took the lead again, 49-42, the Melody put together
an excellent drive. After a minor communication problem with quarterback
Howie Gogo, Jay found the endzone to tie the game at 49-49 as time
expired in regulation.
As
night settled in, the two teams would face off in the first ever
playoff overtime challenge. Each team had to make 2 two point conversions.
Both teams were successful on their first attempt. Then the Melody
took a 53-51 lead. On the final play of the game, Jay of the Melody
slipped and injured his knee as John caught the game tying points.
The game ended in a 53-53 tie!
In
league history, the Melody and Black Knights were dubbed Co-Champions
in 2000. Both teams received the BFL 2000 Championship trophy later
in August at an All-star exhibition.
